Anyone Not use a camera strap

I would certainly never use one of those daft straps that come with Nikon DSLRs as they are not long enough to be worn across the body and the strap always gets in the way anyway.

I would only ever use a sling type strap (eg Blackrapid RS7) that attaches to the tripod socket as this means the strap is always out of the way.

Just yesterday I was in Brussels and saw a guy walking in a busy square holding a DSLR by the body with the strap dangling freely underneath. This was just asking to have the camera grabbed.

I wouldn't use a sling strap on the side it just makes it too easy for theifts and it look strange like carry a gun. you want to come to China and see the Nikon users and there black/yellow neck straps for fun i though Canons black/red strap was bad but Nikon yellow EEK!

I don't generally use them. in the air to air photography game, you don't want the strap to wrap itseelf around anything coloured yellow and black!

Don't use one, they get in the way

Not dropped it yet

no don't use any straps, my camera is either being used to take pictures, or stuck in my bag. I couldn't use the camera with a strap round my neck so it was just getting in the way. I'm probably extra careful when it's in my hand. Less chance of those nasty hustlers nicking my lens too ha ha

Well, since removing the strap, can't see myself going back, although I do have the strap in my bag just in case its ever needed.

Once the camera is dropped it will never be needed again

I always use them btw.

I always use mine. It can be a pain, but it's good to have, especially if I let (trusted) friends use it. Gives me a little less to worry about.

In nightclubs, I ALWAYS have it on. It's a life saver, the amount of times I've had the camera knocked, bumped out of my hands etc. I would say the strap saves my camera from being a victim of gravity and hard ground at least once a week. It's also nice to let go of the camera every now and then.

When doing anything else, eg general street photography or festival stuff, I tend to just wrap the strap around my hand until it's tight and hold the camera in that hand. I've never dropped it doing this, and even if I did I would react fast enough just to clench my first and eventually the strap would stop the camera falling all the way to the ground.

Edit:

also as said, I don't think our insurance covers me if I'm not using the strap properly.

I laugh when I see people drop their expensive phones then bleet about it, why was it not in a case!, I saw a chap drop his DSLR then scream as he saw it bounce, the strap was hanging round his feet as he walked, no sympathy at all.

How can a strap be a pain, its round your neck leaving your hands free, how easy is that.

Use a strap but not the manufactures they are just for advertising.I use straps that cost about £3 thin and light.I have thin straps because as you say they get in the way but if I am using two cameras where do I put the other if I don't have a strap.

bit difficult opening a snap filter case with one hand to get a CPL filter out..:D

always used a strap............ leaving 2 hands free

I just use the strap that came with my camera and as people have said it keeps it safe and let's me use both my hards :)

It can be a pain when I just want it for a quick picture; then it gets in my way. Other than that I like using it because as mentioned, it leaves two hands free.

I always use my neckstrap but never round my neck! If i'm shooting I wrap it round my hand in case it drops or someone tries to run off with it. Never had a problem with either so could probably have done without it so far though.

A £1000 camera without a strap, no way lol

Exactly! When I am carrying £2k worth of camera equipment around with me I like the security that a strap brings. The standard camera straps are nasty though... I much prefer my Black Rapid RS-7.

I think of a camera strap like a seat belt. Hopefully you won't need it, it can feel like its getting in the way sometimes, but if you do need it, it is priceless.

I upgraded my standard strap to a neoprene one, much comfier.

I reitterate that there is a time and a place for the use of the strap, but sometimes it could get in the way and as I pointed out in my previous post, it could be lethal.

I force myself to use it even though I'm not keen on it. Get paranoid that I'm going to drop it any second!
