Yes
When out and about, my camera is always in my shoulder bag and I rarely use the strap when out to shoot, was thinking of removing it all together as its usually just dangling and in the way.

Anyone else not use a strap.

I don't use one...
I'll happily carry mine in my hand, even up in the mountains.
If the ground is too treacherous to hand carry safely (or you need both hands on the rock), then a neck strap is not going to save the camera.

The strap gets wet/muddy if using a low tripod and generally gets in the way.
It makes it harder to put the camera back in the bag.
I'm always worried in a cafe etc when the camera is on a table top that something will drag the strap (and camera) onto the floor.
And I get a stiff neck with prolonged use.
Gave up using straps years ago...

I guess it's like protection filters - all down to personal preference.

Why not use a hand strap, sort of happy medium, gives you some security, but without the annoying dangly bit.
I use double harness straps when working because of using two bodies, but for single body use, I extend one of them and have it diagonally across shoulders/chest, because a neck strap leaves me in pain too.

I quite often don't.

When I do use straps, they are the Black Rapid sling and double strap, so it's just a simple clip to remove the camera from the strap if I don't feel like using it and just handhold the camera until I pop it back into the bag.

Horses for courses I say, but personally, I either use the bag and camera sans strap, or leave the bag in the car and take the strap.

Also, nothing in my insurance about having to use as strap as far as I know - but then again, it's the general purpose Hiscox one, so it's not even specific to photography equipment.

I do and have a way of shooting that I'm used to and like. I have the strap over my right shoulder and it stays there when I bring the camera to my eye, critical length or something. Not sure I'd like to be without one, just because of that little extra bit of security.

But at the end of the day, it's about feeling comfortable with the way you want to work.

I use the spider pro, i prefer that for walking around.

I keep mine on for extra security. All it takes is someone to bump into you and then you'll lose your grip and then you cna just watch alot of money break into pieces on the floor. At the very least insure it up to it's eyeballs.

So I'm not the only one! Couldn't agree more with the above, especially with it makes it harder to put back in the bag.

But as you say its personal preference

I remove it when its windy so that it doesnt create vibrations mounted on a tripod, but I do like it for the additional security, even if it serves little purpose for me.

I gotta admit I did look seriously at getting one.
But I use the tripod a lot, and swapping plates all the time seemed like way too much hassle.

Several people I know use harnesses and they seem really effective at relieving strain on the neck.
But I don't think they would work for me.
A harness would be perfect for a bimble, but I overheat as soon as I go uphill and freeze as soon as I stop; hence am always pulling layers on and off.

Added Security is the only reason its still attached to my camera, also occasionally when both hands are needed elsewhere.

Will have to do a for and against list and take it from there.

I very rarely use my camera strap, so tie it up with an elastic band to keep it out of the way. But I can easily undo it if I need to use the strap. Best of both worlds. :)

LOL - says the man who's avatar shows his camera strap dangling, perfectly placed for getting snagged on a chair or low branch. ;)

I was out the other day and became very aware how vulnerable the camera was without a strap, I'm not a massive fan of neck straps but I'm a clumsy sod, so prefer to have a camera slung iver something than trust myself carrying it.

I do often walk about with the camera on a tripod and just have that slung over a shoulder bindle style, in which case the strap isn't critical.

I took mine off when I got an OpTech sling. Now I actually find myself not bothering at all if I am out specifically for photography, and only put the sling on if I am just out for a walk etc and the cameras coming too.

Having dropped it once broke the filter and needed a repair to get the mirror working, I always use a strap now.

My next purchase will be a wrist strap as I don't like neck straps and tend to just wrap it round my wrist when shooting. I like to carry the rest of my kit in a sling bag so when I stop taking pictures for a bit I just put the camera back in the bag.

My tripod plate screws straight into the bottom of the spider plate so no problems with switching plates.

Mine is either on a shoulder strap or on the end of a tripod, slung over my shoulder.

The shoulder strap looks like an alternatively option, but its still a strap getting in my way but Bigger.

I'm going strapless for now, hope I don't live to regret this decision (sods law) lol

I always use mine even though having the camera slung around my neck really annoys me. I just don't trust myself enough not to drop it.

I find I have to have a neckstrap, because during a day of shooting there are always occasions where you just want to let go of the camera, but still have it readily available.

I always use one... I usually have it on my shoulder, but recently while out find it better around my neck now that i have to have a coat on...

Have previously stuck with the Canon strap, but having now got the TP strap that has release clips, think I will certainly continue using it, and remove the main Neck section quickly when using a tripod or when it is Table'ised :)

Same for me. Quick and easy to get rid of the neck piece which leaves a nice short hand strap that doesn't get in the way.

When I'm using the camera every couple of minutes or so, as in walking round some foreign city, my camera hangs from a length of chain. The top end is attached to my bag shoulder strap. The length of the chain is such that I can hold the camera with fingertips, and on letting it go it hangs more or less where it was. It also acts as a deterrent against being grabbed.

Never used to bother with one at all until I dropped my 30D down the steps in the keep at Castle Rising , awful lot of bits came off. Now have Optech straps all the time.

Stu.

I got fed up with the camera strap fairly quickly with my first dslr. I never felt comfortable with it round my neck or shoulder and often just wrapped the strap around my hand.

I got my wife an old 30d and she struggled with the weight of it so I got her a hand strap, one of these , it helped greatly and she could comfortably walk around with the 30d and 150mm macro so decided to get myself one and the canon strap hasn't been on the camera since, brilliant bit of kit

Does it have to be removed if using a tripod?

If you are talk about the cheap black/red strap that came with the camera than the answer is NO i don't use that crap, also i don't use any strap on my camera at all it's a waste of time having one IMO
