I am thinking of applying for a job in Oban and wondered if anyone lives there, and could describe the good and bad points of being so far North?( I have obviously taken into account the photographic opportunities:thumbs:) Cheers, Rob

I'm not too far from Oban... but why exactly do you want to make the move? Its lovely up here and all (I'm from Dunoon) but it's not an easy life. Everything in London as you know is on your doorstep... far from it up here.

Hi Norma, I have been to the Highlands a number of times, and the life seems so laid back. London is the centre of the universe, but there are other life styles. Rob

If you are an outdoors type and into into hill walking or fishing or birdwatching etc. you would be on the edge of a paradise.
If you are a dedicated city type you will need to do a lot of thinking as to whether you'll fit in.
Have you been there?

It rains a lot:-

From someone coming from London, yes, it is far North.

Oban? So far North?

It's about as far north as Perth and Dundee and I doubt that inhabitants of either city would describe themselves as living in the far north.

Not so much the latitude. It's the travelling.
Perth is an hour's drive from Glasgow. Dundee is only 20 mins more.
Oban is nearer 2.5 hour's drive to Glasgow.

Having said that, due to the internet there is much less need to travel in order to shop.

Well there is a lot less people for a start 8000 v 8 million no contest...
Being in the west means that the town gets more unpredictable weather than on the East Coast. You never know what it is going to be like hour to hour let alone day to day!
More settled weather seems to occur in April and May.
the rest of the time its either freezing or p***ing of rain..:D:D
Wherever you turn, though, there's no escaping the fact that Oban exists because of the sea. oh yes and highland cattle :)

great friendly pubs and in the summer lots of tourists from London :D

I did many seasons of scuba diving up there when I lived down south - well Durham - and loved it - but then I am an outdoor type

moved to Glasgow with the job - horrible - now live in a small cottage on a remote farm south of Glasgow - love it. Lots of superb hill walking and trout fishing for me

if you're young you may find Oban a bit quiet especially in the winter - each to his own

try it ! - a new life experience - if you dont like it - so what, go someplace else ...

Thanks for all the replies, I'm an old man of 47 and still love hill walking, fishing and outdoor pursuits. I have been to Scotland many times and after nearly 8 years working in London I thought a bit of peace and quiet would be nice. Am still weighing up the pros and cons. Rob

if you're single or just the OH give it a try

my family are in Essex - it's only a days drive - and France - easy from Glasgow

I'm a rolling stone - worked in Canada, US, Japan, China - wouldn't have missed it for the world ! hope you take the plunge. !!.....

Oban sounds tailor made for you. More so if you can get a house on the outskirts.

Thanks John and Dougie. Spent 10 years as a squaddie, so have had itchy feet since leaving. My present job allows me to work all over, so I guess I have little to lose:thumbs: Rob

Never been there, my one enduring memory of the name is a BBC weather forecaster saying "It's -27C at Oban and the sea has started to freeze" one winter maybe 20 years ago or so.

Brrr!
