were moving out of the UK later this year and I'd like have a nice Kingfisher image (as well as many others) before we leave. Any help is appreciated!

I really don't know that much about the little iridescent birds and how rare or common they may be. Can anyone point me towards a recording of their "call/song" and some good general knowledge?

Cheers!

You can check the RSPB site for info on Kingfishers and listen to their call. They're pretty widespread in the UK and not particularly threatened being Amber status at the moment. A bad winter can severely affect their numbers due to frozen pools making it difficult for them to feed and last winter was a bit severe at times so we don't yet know the affect on populations.

It's unlikely that anyone privy to the location of wild KFs is going to disclose their location - and extremely unlikely on an internet board -people who've invested time in getting close to these birds aren't going to disclose the location. Also you need to be aware that disturbing these birds at or near the nesting site is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act . You need a Schedule 1 Licence to photograph them near the nest sites.

Quite honestly your best bet is to visit a wildlife reserve where their are Kingfishers - a Google search will throw up plenty. Aqualate estate in North Staffordshire used to have Kingfishers visiting and probably still does. There's a public hide there, but be prepared for some long waits and some blank days.

I never tire to hear someone say the health and saftey of the subject is more important the image/tog's out put. Thanks CT will check the resources you've suggested.

Your other option of course and possibly more suitable as you're time -challenged, is to spend a day with a wildlife pro advertising Kingfisher workshops - again a Google search should throw up a good few advertising workshops on various species.

As said in the first post they are rare and as far as I am aware you should really need to for a licence to photography them.

We have them up here, if your interested. Less than an hour from Knutsford.

Have a look at this page on the BBC site

http://www.bbc.co.uk/manchester/features/walk/index.shtml

There is a walk there that I'm lead to believe includes a slight off path to the river where there are Kingfishers. Maybe spend an afternoon for a looksee.

I intend to go myself in a few weeks for a quick look. As some one who doesn't want to disturb them I doubt if I'll get a look in but worth a walk on a fine day :D

Be prepared for some disappointment they are very difficult to photograph. As mentioned a kf workshop might be the best way to get quicker results.
