... Gets people to write things on boards that reflects their personality, and then they hold it up for the shot. I saw her work in the Portrait Gallery a few years back. I've done a similar thing for one of my uni projects, and just can't remember her name!

Hi there, I think the person you're thinking of is Gillian Wearing. Hope this helps.

I studied her for one of my projects when I was studying photography at college.

I think this was a nice idea but it's been copied by just about every student by now. :(

Better late than never guys, I have 2 hours to do a bit of research on her before I hand in my project! :P Cheers :D

Christ, yeah.
That's the thing I hate about the curriculum in photography gcse and a-level.

Everyone is shown the same photographers to 'research' and all it ends up being is images inspired by either David LaChappelle, Nan Golding or Barbara Krueger!

What, no Mapplethorpe anymore?

I suppose he is out of Vogue now!

Very Dylan/Warhol-esque

Our teacher did show us a few images from Mapplethorpe but unfortunately the photographer was frowned upon by the majority of our department.

Tbh, I never really got his work anyway :p

Some of his flower series were nice images, but to be honest I thought most of his stuff was rubbish. He made his name by taking outrageous photographs of the gay community and it was Gay porn under the guise of art. I thought it was rubbish then and still do.

it is amazing what you can get away with in the name of art! :bang:

When I was at art college for the second time (early 90s) they were ramming Mapplethorpe down our throats.

Mapplethorpe's Pistils and Altars books are fantastic coffee table talking points, if a bit bonkers, especially the well hung black dude with his flies unzipped!!

Great treatment of light but he is totally overrated as a photographer - it's all abit in our face for my liking.

You can't argue about the technicals of his photography, he was a great photographer, not everyone can stomach his subjects though, which is a shame really.
