Yes
i know of one camera shop local to me who used to drop the prizes to get a sale (obviously the prices were inflated to account for this i imagin).

but do jessops offer anything like this? ie can you go in and ask for discount or is it just stupidly cheeky and the price you see is the price you pay?

I always haggle whatever the shop, they can only say no. They defo drop the prices on used stuff as I've bought a fair few bits from them in the past

I have a friend that works in Jessops and he said the margin on cameras and lenses is fairly small but the margin on accessories like memory cards and bags is a lot higher so there is more room for them to move on that.

There is no harm in asking but don't expect too much from them.

I've managed discounts off Jessops when buying multiple items. I reckon they can only justify it when you are also purchasing asseccories like memory cards/bags/etc (as Rob also mentioned).

They have always price matched for me when I find items cheaper in other shops.

I think most (if not all) of their shops will price match to other local shops and some willl price match to certain "shops" off the internet. Either way, if you take in the evidence of the price and from where you can obtain it and ask, they can only say no (but hopefully yes !!).

Personnaly, I have had mixed results with them over price matching from the internet, never had a problem matching to another shop though, even when the other shop had a sale on - I worked on the principal, if you don't match it for me, I'm going there to buy it

You can try haggling in Jessops, sometimes if they have a good margin they will come and go a wee bit, but normally they'll stick to their guns, as Rob says the margins on cameras is pretty small.

I tried this last week, they refused to knock £15 off a D90 as Park Cameras (Who I was asking them to price match) were more than ten miles from them. They only price match if cheaper in a store within this radius.

I was surprised considering it was only £15 off a £650 body.

they have hard limits that they can't break, but they do have some wiggle room on price, yes... give them an incentive to drop the price and you can probably haggle it down a bit, or get something small thrown in for free or something to sweeten the deal.

but yeah... always give them an incentive to do so, don't just be like 'hi there I want a D90 with no accessories or warranty, can you knock anything off the price' :P umm and err about the model below or something.. or look at the tripods or filters or something... 'if I buy one of these filters, as I'm buying the whole camera and two lenses, can you chuck in the other filter for free?'

depends on lots of things.

Generally not on single items,
Generally not in nationwide stores,
Generally not on when the price is less than a couple of hundred.

With pretty much any camera you should be able to get free memory card or batter or the like.

when i brought a non-slr a couple of years ago i got 50% off a memory card, case and spare battery. That was at Jessops.

Obviously though times are hard for everyone.

I have been able get discounts in jessops, when I got my d300 6 weeks ago about, it was still listed at £1100, I managed to get the camera and mb-d10 for £1200. I think it is just a case of how you go about it. I hasten to add it was before the massive price drops were around.

I tried to get them to price match a D3000 kit for my brother with Calumet. The difference was £15 but the manager would not budge on price.

About 18 months ago they did advertise that they would price match in various photo magazines & I managed to get the same branch to drop their price by £150 on a lens (they were selling at a much higher price than most of the retaillers) - I guess it is a far tougher market now.

Matt I have just bought a lens from them and their shop in Bristol would not price match against an on-line price. However if you buy from them on-line they will price match.

I think that I may have a perverse view of price matching between retailers (not necessarily between retailer and internet). Other things being equal, I would never go for a straight price match, I would want something more. It's not about me being greedy, but rather more about the higher priced retailer having to do more to get the business from the retailer that had a better price in the first place.

Striaghtforward haggling is another matter. I suppose many of us are now becoming accustomed to asking for something on a higher priced purchase.

My local Jessops has price matched the last two times I bought there (to the Amazon price). The easiest and least stressful way of getting money off is to know the prices before you go in and then politely ask if they will price match. Also, if you buy multiple items then they are likely to be more amenable. But like any other request of this type it will vary from store to store and from day to day.... Just know your stuff and be prepared to walk away if you can get the items somewhere else that you are comfortable to buy from.

Not read entire thread. Jessops always price match Warehouse Express for me, never been refused yet. Normally end up getting extremely competitive deals as a result. I often get freebies thrown in too depending on purchase size. Got about £100 of filters once, but to be fair, UV protective ones etc. Pretty useless imo.

Gary.
