I joined reddit a few days ago and apart from one photo that got 750 upvotes and a few comments, all the others I've posted, (quite a lot), I'm getting nothing beyond 3 to 20 votes and no comments, no matter what sub reddit I post to. What a difficult place it is. Obviously we all post things that we think are very good but perhaps they're not as good as we thought. And I'm sure I've posted some of those. But I've also posted some that I know are good from comments here and my flickr page, but they just get no love on reddit. There's tons and tons of great photos I see being posted there by other people and they're all really good either in content or aesthetics or just technically excellent, and it's the same story for them. But then there's always a photo or two right at the top which rise exponentially within the first hour of posting, and gaining thousands of votes, even a hundred thousand. Some aren't even as good as the ones not getting much notice. From what I can tell, there are literally several million photographers on that site. It seems to be a lot of luck if your photo gets star treatment.

I must say, I wish I hadn't joined there now, it does little for your confidence and makes you feel like a crappy photographer, lol.

There's more to life :)

It has oft been said that if you want to use such a site to get your ego massaged, then look elsewhere....................I surmise the only people getting the benefit are Reddit themselves ;)

Not about getting the ego massaged (although of course that's always a nice bonus :D), it's about sharing and getting some chat going. It's a bit like I wouldn't want to talk to myself, I'd rather share conversation with other people. I see that as the same with photography.

Different sites appreciate different styles of photographs. Ello.co is all about art, for example. You have to find what works for a site before posting, plus getting 'known' by key individuals usually helps because most appreciation follows approval from the right people - no approval, no appreciation.

Good points well made and taken onboard, Toni.

I've been on a few different photo sites over the years. Something to consider is viewing size - if images can easily be viewed large (i.e. Flickr as it is now) then subtlety and detail are important, but if they are generally small then you'll have to really hoof the contrast, saturation and keep images simple to catch people's attention.

I sometimes browse Reddit. Remember the feed is like Instagram feeds. So you don’t always see every post when you browse. It reloads each time so I could easily miss any photos from a photography subreddit despite being subscribed to it.

As pointed out above, Reddit has a particular user base and each subreddit have people who behave differently.

Reddit is the main site I use daily, I wouldn't worry about posting images there looking for upvotes, you'll just have it reposted by someone else taking all the credit from you, upvotes as much as likes don't get you paid. I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks guys for the comments. One of the reasons I like getting upvotes, and to be honest, I'm mostly talking about street photography on reddit, is because it gives me inspiration to pick up the camera and go out and shoot more photos which I love doing. But I've not been out taking photos the last couple of days or so because I've been feeling a bit down and thinking, what's the point. However, of about a dozen photos I posted which got very little interest, there's one now that is gaining some momentum. It's really not a great photo, just a simple one of a guy waiting at a bus stop at night. But it's enough to make me want to go out and get other shots in a similar vein. When we've spent money on good gear, it's nice to stay inspired.

The only time to worry if other people like your photography is when they are paying you for it, otherwise produce work that you like. If you think you aren’t producing work to a decent standard then get your work critiqued by a competent photographer/s.

You will get a lot more up votes in Reddit for funny images rather than a good one.

That or porn.

I'm sure porn would always work. :D
Tried funny, still nothing. Is there a sub reddit you recommend for that? I've posted in r/pics, r/itookapicture, r/mildlyinteresting, r/streetphotography, r/thenightfeeling.

There's one I haven't tried called r/CasualUK. That might be worth a try since the brits will get the humour.

You need to be on the same level as the stuff on imgur front page. Reddit is basically looking for good memes.

Ah right. Creating a good meme certainly wouldn't be easy. I've taken a photo or two that I think are mildly amusing but not meme material.
