I received an email from Total Jobs last week linking to Home Learning College. As I'm looking to get back into work, I thought maybe a professional qualification might help so I registered my interest and someone came round to see me and discuss my options. It was said that the best option for me was to study for AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Diploma in Accounting. I did the first year of this 8 years ago but due to work pressures at the time was unable to continue with it.

Has anyone here done this sort of home study and what are your thoughts on it? Has anyone actually used this particular organisation and what are your thoughts on them? Obviously there is a cost implication to me so I would like to make an informed decision.

Even if you don't have any experience of this but have some thoughts, then post anyway. Let's start a conversation. ;)
 
I get the emails from them, well, I used to, they seem to have stopped now...

Seems legit, and any qualification is good (apart from psychology degree) :mad:

I say go for it, accounting isn't the most interesting job in the world, but it pays well and you should really consider something like this an investment. :)

What about OU? Or indeed your local HE centres? I cant find any linky but I seem to remember that these are quite a high sales oriented place.Interestingly, they don't seem to be recruiting tutors but are recruiting salespeople.

Have you tried asking advice on the http://www.accountingweb.co.uk forums (the 'any answers bit')? They have excellent and helpful forums and ~I'm sure that you would get good recommendations about course providers.

I only get the odd photography job every now and again, certainly not enough to pay the bills, so I have to try and get back into the boring accounting stuff.
 
It's true that you get out of these things what you are willing to put in to them. Not having read the reviews I can't be certain but I reckon that a lot of the negatives will be down to people expecting more than they put in.

I've done some OU and I think the one thing you must have is disclipine to make yourself study even when you don't feel like it. Early mornings seemed best for me in terms of being able to take in what I was trying to learn.

Great post, couldn't agree more. Of the negative reviews, many seem to be from people who are complaining that tutors weren't regularly contacting them to "see how they are doing". This is something that wouldn't be a problem for me as I like to just get on with things and I would contact them if I needed any help.

In my last job, I worked from home two days a week which requires an amount of self discipline so I'm quite confident in that area. Mornings have always been better for me as well but then I suffer with fatigue in the afternoons, I always used to curse people for arranging afternoon meetings.

I did an AAT course years ago, then studied ACCA and became a qualified accountant. I left accountancy about 12 years ago because it was just too racy for me. ;)

I wonder how highly regarded AAT is ? I suppose the fact that you're doing something towards gaining a qualification may impress a potential employer, but I'm really not sure of the merits of that qualification.

Without knowing your ambition, it's difficult to say, but personally I think it might be a bit limiting - it used to be no more than a glorified book-keeping course. Nothing wrong with that of course, if that's where you want to go.

But like I say, I left that world a long time ago, so I could be talking *******s.

The reason I am looking at AAT is because many conversations I have had with employment agencies have included them asking me whether I have or am studying AAT so it does appear to be something of a draw for employers. Also, the course includes learning Sage Accounts software which is something a lot of employers are asking for.

OK, sounds good then. Funnily enough I've been around the Sage world pretty much since I left accountancy. Not the Line 50 stuff, but selling Line 500 / Sage 1000 solutions.
