I've had an offer of £1400 ex P&P for my D700 from a dealer, Trouble is, he wants me to post it off to him for "valuation" prior to payment, which makes me nervous. Has anyone heard of/dealt with/know about Cash 4 Cameras? I've spoken to the chap and he seems genuine, but the thought of posting it off without a guarantee of payment scares the hell out of me.
 
I would keep hold of it if I were you, You can't be too careful. Will you not get that price on here?
 
£1400 sounds like too high an offer from a dealer, they're only £1699 new, trade price for new ones must be around £1400 inc vat, my guess would be they'd receive the camera then say it's not up to scratch and make a lower offer.

also where does the VAT figure in this transaction, if he's VAT registered and tries to make £100 profit on a buy in price of £1400 that's £1500 + 15% vat £225 = £1725, £25 more than a new one.

The numbers just don't add up :shrug:

I would have hoped so, especially if a dealer is prepared to offer that kind of price.

To be fair, his first offer was to travel up here, but it's too far away for me to travel. He claims to advertise in Amateur Photographer. Might pop down to the newsagents and take a peek for an advert.
 
The web site doesn't inspire confidence - on the about us page it states that they are not open to the public and the address looks like a house (according to Google maps) and there's nothing for sale in the for sale section!

I'd run away and then keep running a little more just to make sure :)

That sounds even more bizarre , a 500 mile round trip to pay more than trade price when new for a 2nd hand camera

I peered at Google maps too. I'm more and more inclined to the price drop offer theory....
 
Don't rush things too much. At that price someone will eventually buy it. I would if I had [considerably] more funds.

That page looks very poor. For sale section is under construction, and they will send you a cheque. I don't accept cheques for a very good reason.

I havent heard of them but when i sold my 1ds to MPB they did the same thing. It was posted to them (they arranged collection) and i had the money in my account the day after they recieved the camera. the valuation here seems a little high to me
 
MPB photographic, advertise on here.

A bit different sending your camera to someone that is well known than to a random internet ad.
 
MPB, or sell it on here, they tend to go for even slightly more than that on the classifieds on here...
 
Don't mean to hijack the thread but do you contact MPB though pm on this board? or via their site directly? Are they trustable? I'm looking to sell my 40D as well but can't post on classified since I just signed up a few days ago (I use POTN before this). It probably will take me months, if not weeks, to reach 100 posts. Thanks for your advice.
 
Months? Not at all. Steer clear of out of focus (those posts dont count)

Look at 'unanswered posts' (6 right now), go throught the topic areas of interest and post comments - real ones not just 'great shot' - on 3 or 4 in each area and you can be up to 100 posts in a couple of days. OK, you'll have to put a bit of effort in but it is easy enough to reply to 2 or 3 posts while the kettle boils, or in an interval in corronation street or whatever.

You only need another 87, and as a bye product you'll get your name out there and become a known, respected/detested/ignored member of the community :-)
