Anyone have their lens and body part company unexpectedly?

On the 5 or six occasions this has happened previously, the 300mm was on its way off the body but I noticed it before it actually came off. On a few occasions it was probably me accidently pressing the lens release button.

However the other day I went to focus on a shot and my left hand was left with the lens (fortunately the lens strap was around my neck) and my right hand was left holding the MKiii in the hand strap Phew!!

I had been blaming the 300 but when they actually parted company this time I had the Canon 2x TC on and it was the lens + TC I got left with in my left hand.

This has only happened with the much heavier 300, never happened with 24-70 or 100-400.

So I'm wondering has anyone else experienced this?

Suggestions/Solution?

Been there, done it! with my mk3 and 300f2.8Lis, sent the camera in and they could not find a problem so I got them to replace the mount on the lens.

But what about the TC that was fitted to the lens? That would indicate the problem was with the camera instead surely? :shrug:

Mine was ok with a TC but there again my 300 was ok on every other body.:shrug:

My eventual thoughts exactly. Though the pin on the body 'seems' to be working as I would expect.

The fact that the TC suffered the same effect 'eventually' led me to the body... or my possible lack of care, though believe me since the first time this 'nearly' happened I really have been on the case regarding touching the lens release button!
 
I had trouble with a 300mm coming adrift on a MKII body on Skomer one year. I found the spring loaded locking in the body would occasionally stick in and not lock the lens in place. All I did was to put a drop of very fine oil on it and make sure it was free, not had any trouble since.

Believe me I have always checked it is locked else I'd be the idiot to blame ;-)

Brian, As I said to Ian I have always since the first time ensure the lens was locked on, and it always has been, though a bit of very fine oil might do good, I still find it incredible that such a tiny raised pin is supposed to hold such a substantial piece of kit to the mount :-(
 
Had my 300mm 2.8L come away unexpectedly from a MKIII at an indoor swimming event.
 
Hmm! Ominous... Thanks for that. I hope you had the lens strap around your neck then?

Anyone else care to point to the 300mm f2.8 as suspect? I hope not :shrug:
 
I was fortunate I had one hand on the lens tripod collar so when it came away I had lens in one hand and the body in the other.
 
Wow this has me worried now! I'm gonna be getting a 1D mk III soon and have a 300mm...although not the 2.8 version which I appreciate is significantly different in size and weight.
 
Mine happened a few years ago and not happened since (touch wood :bonk:).
 
I remember it well as I was up on a gantry looking over some spectators.....if it had slipped out of my hand I dread to think of the damage it could have done someone.

Ouch! Here's me just thinking of 'my precious' but that gets into 'liability' !
