Anyone had/got Kidney stones

I've just had my pre op assesment for the laser op

Mine so i've been told is 1.4cm!
I've just had the pre op assesment for the laser option. They offered me the lithotripsy (smashing them with sound waves) But as I've had kidney stones before and had lithotripsy before which feels like a baby elephant jumping on your kidney every time your heart beats I decided against it and opted for the laser. But, after reading the above post by John I am now undecided which route to follow? I quite like the idea of a small 'nick' in your back, take the bloody thing out, couple of stitches, Bit of bed rest job done! The stitches will be the ones that desolve by themselves so I never have to see another hospital again!
The only pain relief that my GP offered me was co-codamol which does b****r all apart from make you feel sick! He also said that due to the location of my kidney stone it should not give me to much trouble...... I hated to disapoint him!
So that's where I am up to pre-op done and just waiting for the appointment for surgery.
One thing that I have noticed though is that when it begins to hurt really badly (it hurts all the time) if I drink lots of fluid and I mean 'LOTS OF FLUID' most of the time it settles down again.

After my experience, given the choice I'd go in through the back, I think the issue with mine was it had left the kidney and was stuck in the ureter so that wasn't an option. Mine was just a bit smaller than yours (1.2cm) but having seen where it was lodged, it was a wonder anything got through at all!

I've had a bit of a search and can find nothing resembling a proper clinical trial. At the end of their website, Renavive say, in tiny type:

The statements made on our websites have not ben (sic) evaluated by the FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administation) (more sic). Our products are not intended to diagnose cure or prevent any disease.

The spelling mistakes don't fill me with confidence. Expensive woo, it seems. Ask your doc if they have ever heard of the stuff.

Bit of an update, had a real bad session during the week, couldnt move and was in so much pain my body was going into spasms, doctor came out within the hour on a home call and he said we should have rung an ambulance, he rang one and i spent another 14 hours being messed around by the NHS, was initially put on a Morphine cannula until pain eased, also had 2 litres from a drip as i was dehydrated, my local hospital cant treat me as im under the care of a specialist urinary unit at another hospital about 12 miles away (Pinderfields), when i say they cant treat me i mean they wont do any invasive treatment/surgery as it would conflict with the recommended care/treatment plan from the other hospital, they did try to get me a bed over at the other hospital at about 2am but obviously none available so was just kept on a drip and pain relief and discharged later that morning.

As well as Tramadol and Co-codamol whose doses have both been increased im also now taking Buscopan to help relax my internal muscles when i go into spasm, im also on long term meds for a stomach/bowel complaint and the Buscopan should also help this. Also taking a general muscle relaxant as my back muscles often go into spasm when the pain from the Kidney kicks in.

Still not heard anything from Pinderfields hospital about getting me seen to and its almost 2 weeks since i was initially discharged from there, i accept theres a waiting list but do you go on a waiting list to get on the waiting list, probably need to get on the phone and pester them

Still.i have my laptop and a TV so all is not lost.

Sounds like you're really going through it! Hope things start to improve soon. And don't forget to post a pic of the stone when you get it out. :)

Had a call late yesterday to say there was a cancellation on Friday morning at 8.40 and would i like to take it, you bet i did, 4000 zaps of shockwave treatment in my first session has started to break up the stone, another 2 more sessions should do it, they have to be at least 2 weeks apart

A 40 minute procedure which can be very uncomfortable, needed supository and oral pain killers, very glad when it was over, been home about an hour and pain level is increasing but at least theyve started to do something.

Stay away from people with colds. I've got a rotten one and it's agony to sneeze or cough. And don't be afraid to feel like a bit of a wimp and follow the doctors instructions to take painkillers and not wait until you're in pain to take them.

:plusone:

Apparently it's much easier to prevent pain than to abolish it.

Last time I had a suppository it was all but useless. Took ages to swallow it and for all the good it did, I might just have well have shoved it up my @r5e!

Update, was admitted back into Hospital within 4 hours of being released, apparently the shock wave treatment didn't go as expected and all t did was to knock a few chips off the big stone and this has allowed the larger part to move into places it couldn't get to before, why on earth they just couldnt cut me open and pull the thing out is beyond me, seems they are all afraid to do invasive procedures.

Anyway, was admitted to Dewsbury at 4.40pm of Friday and then moved to Pinderfieds at 01.45 Sat morning, Morpheme does little for the pain but the declofenic up the jacksy seems to work quite well, not a nice feeling, some big bruiser of a nurse sticking their fat finger up my ring (and thats a female nurse) LOL

They wont release me until they can control the pain, just been told on Doctors rounds this mornng i may need a stent fitted, ive told them i dont mind but would prefer nothing goes up my little old chap (old infection fear)

Booked in for another CT scan and they will take it from there

My "3" dongle wont work and nor will any mobile phones but im logged onto the Hospitals guest wi-fi which is very slow, i have a shed load of movies on my laptop so not bored yet!!!!!!

The old ones are the best, ay Nod, still made I laaaarf.:lol:

Thinking about it, it may have been a little unkind to Gary, although (as you say) it is such an old joke it probably didn't make him laugh. The only advice I can offer him is to relax when the horny handed nurse approaches with the next dose - she's seen it all before and I'm sure it's almost as unpleasant for her to shove it as it is for him to have it shoved! (He could always offer to do the application himself...)

If I were you I'd be asking for a second opinion by now...............I don't know how they justify leaving you in so much pain for so long when you seem to have made it quite clear that you'd prefer the more invasive operation...............unless there's a strong medical reason for not doing it!

Best of luck...........and I hope things get much better for you soon.

Had a further 2 ultrasounds and a CT scan yesterday (picked up a 4cm cyst in other kidney but apparently nothing to worry about) good news is that after almost 24 hrs pain free im going home (yippee, just need someone to pick me up)

5pm yesterday was moved to the specialist urinary ward but at 8pm was then moved again to another ward, WTF

Still. had my good nights sleep in quite a while, just fed up or eating food other people have ordered, dont ever eat the Vienesse steaks, its basically one of those tinned hamburgers in gravy

next 2 treatments for the wet bed blasting treatment im booked in as an in patient just in case this happens again, ive requested the invasive treatment but they refuse as the stone has now been blasted, but they will do it shpuld either of the next 2 treatments like this first one dont work as they should

as i write its 10am and in just waiting for discharge notes and some prescriptions writing up

At my discharge, I waited for over 4 hours for the pharmacy to send the drugs up to the ward...

Good luck with the peeing gravel Gary.

Ha, was told at 10.10 i was being taken to discharge lounge on lower ground floor, finally released at 15.45pm and just got home, absolute bunch off first class muppets

Was moved off ward 32 yesterday to ward 34 at 15.55 and settled in, had a bite to eat and was feeling quite well and only a low level of pain so settled in for a sleep at about 7pm, was woken up and 7.45 only to be told theyre moving me, i told them literally to eff off, even the nurse in charge didnt have any idea why as she said there were 5 available beds on the ward anyway and she had no notification of any incoming patients but she said she just gets emails from the bed managers and must comply, begrudgingly i moved onto ward 46a and i was the only person an that 6 bed ward until about 4am when someone who had been on the previous ward with me was wheeled in, he also said that last ward still had available beds/

They even took the wrong woman to the wrong address when i was in the discharge lounge, 2 old ladies called June, 1 going home to husband and the other going back to her care home, the ambulance crew came in and asked for June, June 1 said "here" (June 2 was asleep next to her) they took June 1 out without confirming her address and last name with her wristband, about 40 minutes later they brought June 1 back after she told them "i dont live here, im from such and such care home"

They had actually got as far as June 2's house, incredible, there are lots of other balls ups i could tell you but there is absolutely no point, no one cares anymore.

Shouldn't  at the June tale but I did! All I can say is that EVERY time I was moved, my wristband was looked at and EVERY med time it was checked, even after almost 2 weeks on the same ward in the same spot.
On the next stay (and the previous, several years before) in a different hospital, I ended up in wards unused to the area I had needs for... First time I ended up on a medical ward after a haemorrhoidectomy which meant that every time I needed a morphine shot, they had to get a doctor to sign it off and I didn't get the advice that would have been given to me on a surgical ward (which, once I had been given [advice] meant I could stop the pain before it set in...) More recently, my symptoms pointed to a gall bladder problem so I ended up on a gastro intestinal surgical ward but the actual cause of the problem was pneumonia - basically a complete reversal of the old problem! Fortunately the pneumonia showed up on the belly x-ray they took on the first day I was in so a quick course of IV antibiotics sorted it PDQ. Pretty sure the pneumonia was caused by all the bed rest I had before the tumour was diagnosed and after the op.

And to cap it all off i picked up an infection while in there so now on antibiotics to clear that up, oh well, i shouldn't complain, it could have been MRSA, mind you they haven't said what the infection actually is GULP

Good nights pain free sleep last night, 4 bacon sarnies for breakfast but i cant do a wee for the life in me and im dying for one.
