Has anyone had experience of or own the Sigma 300-800 (Sigmonster) I'm wondering if it should be my next option for more distance.

Yes. Very nice lens, but needs really, really good support as I'm sure you are aware. Plenty of example shots on the web. Sharp at f5.6. Not such good value now, but I bought new when they were half what they are now.

I have seen a few guys over at Bird Forum who have got some good results with the 300-800 Ken - I suspect you will need to budget in £700-£800 for a decent tripod and Gimbal head if you have not already got them.

I wonder how much shipping would cost from the US, MPB in Brighton had one advertised a few days ago at £3200
According to the B & H used one for sale the shipping is between $190 and $400 according to the different methods. Not sure how it effects the UK but duty and tax adds another $1000 to the price as well.

Ade has the Nikon Variant, very nice lens, AF isn't quick from what i have heard but the versatility of being able to go from 300mm and zoom right into 800mm out weighs that, looking at the results Ade gets

I know someone who uses one as well. He loves it. Barely any longer than my 600mm but requires the same level of tripod support to get the most out of it. He's got some superb images with his, especially on a crop sensor body!

I think Fracster wrote a review on the forum, I'm sure you'll find it with a search.

What do you want to know Ken?
