Anyone grow their own chillis?

No idea Neil..could be lack of ventilation?..Mine are all on window sills and doing fine.I wont be putting mine in the greenhouse for another few weeks yet.Maybe worth repotting them with new soil/compost?

Mine are still yet to show through the seed compost. The Courgettes that are in the same mini propagator have started showing but no Hungarian Hot Wax yet. IIRC, they take 10-14 days so not worried yet - if they fail, I'll just buy a couple of plants. Toms and Nasturtiums from seeds collected last year are starting to show too...

My 2 main plants were accidentally outside in the greenhouse last night but are back inside now. I completely forgot i'd put them out for a good blast of sunlight.

Going to start putting all mine out in the greenhouse now on the milder days for some decent light and get them used to the fantastic UK weather slowly!

Good day to get those chillies out for some needed sun! Also just picked up a few more couple more bhut orange Copenhagen another red savina habenero and a caramel ghost.

Lol lovely here mate blue skies and greenhouse is in the 80's!

3 HHW seedlings starting to poke through... That should be enough even if the others don't germinate. 1/2 tempted to plant a few seeds from chillis I grew before I was ill in 2012 (can't remember of the seeds are from '10 or '11, could be older...) since the chillis that we dried are pretty fiery. Mexican roulette???!!!

Go for it Nod!..Decided to try a few from seed myself this year.

Got the greenhouse all cleared out washed and ready.

Still deciding what to go for this year.

Since Tuesday, all the other seeds have sprung up so I now have 6 seedlings. Can easily find homes for the spares. Will see if the home grown seeds are still viable in 10-14 days!

Think I will have a few spare plants available this year! lol...I just wanted to try from seed to see how I got on as it will save me a few quid next year on plants if I do my own from the seeds I get.

I have little seedlings growing in my existing plants. I might lift them tomorrow and see how they get on. I also seem to have a slug but couldn't find it. The cat has also had a munch of the leaves again, I think he gets annoyed when the leaves grow onto his window ledge.

That me and running for this year.

Going with

Mild - Big Jim
Medium - Peruvian Lemon Drop
Hot - Bhut Jolokia

Done them before and (as you know) they're nippy !

More for the novelty of giving my brother in law a test but they come in handy for making jams and chutneys as you only need a tiny amount which helps with room in the greenhouse.

The mild big Jim's were a hit last year. I should have done more as they make a lovely alternative to peppers in salads.

The lemon drops look interesting so I'm keen to see how they are.

I am doing a lot more milder ones this year also..one of my favourites from last year was a cheyenne..stunning flavour and medium heat, quite a small plant as well so doesnt take up too much space. Most my superhots will be dried and ground down into flakes and powder this year.

No sign of the seedlings from the home growns yet. Only been in for 3 days though. Anyway, they're freebies and if they don't sprout, I'll chuck something else in the fibre pots!

Mine are coming through...3-4 day in a damp paper towel in sandwich bag in the airng upboard and then into a small propagator on the windowsil.About 5-6 of the finger chillies broke the surface of the soil yesterday.

My Patio Sizzles are just showing after nearly three weeks (in the greenhouse).
Half the Cayennes have germinated and I am re-sowing the failed pots today.
Red peppers also very slow in germinating this year.
How do you germinate them mate?

Mine are inside the house on an East facing table (just inside the doors out into the conservatory) over a radiator (which comes on when the thermostat drops below 18°C) overnight, going out into the conservatory during the day when the temperature is usually around 20°C. Seeds are in ~30mm square fibre pots in seed compost, under a plastic propagating lid. Since all mine are "bog stock" rather than superhots or other exotica, I'm not sure they need special treatment. The courgettes and Nasturtiums could probably do with some hardening off now it's warmer during the day - problem is that the sweet peas are already in the cloched planter that I usually use as a cold frame for hardening! Patio is laid out ready for the courgettes and toms in their self watering gro-bags and I have the pots/troughs ready for the conservatory window sills and the indoor toms, cucumbers and chillis.

My grow bag greenhouses have blown away twice this week. I bought these ones because the grow bag holds them down but the grow bag stays put and the cover just flies off and takes the upright poles with it.

The joys of living in the wind tunnel of Knockhill!

Sorry to hear that..has been pretty windy here as well last few days.

I think i'm going to wait a few weeks and then replace with bigger plants. I had bought packs of apache chilli and a basic tomato plant. The spares I kept in my small glass greenhouse so I still have those plus the 2 big plants that are in the house. Just need to replace peppers, beef tomato and cherry tomato.

Husband is suggesting using really strong stick on velcro to attach the cover to the base but I suspect the whole lot would just collapse if the top can't lift off.

what temperature

Not constant temperature, just in the greenhouse.
I thought about buying a heater but I'm not that keen on one, the plants will catch up sooner or later.
Everything in the garden and greenhouse is late this year, even down here on the south coast, because we've had a long spell of cold and dry northerly winds.
Even the hedgerows, elderberry and the hawthorn are late too.

You may struggle with germination mate as temps are still low at night.Best to keep them around 75 degrees to get them to start off germination.Try a few in damp kitchen towel..place them in sandwich bag and then airing cupboard.Mine started germinating after just 3 days.

..and a couple of pics of some seedlings..these were in a packet 8 days ago now they are like this!

That last pair of shots is about where the Hungarian Hot Waxes are now. The home seeded ones are still not quite poking through the surface, although one of them is showing the top of a curved stem.

I'm doing 4 different varieties this year, cayenne , Naga, scotch bonnet and chocolate habanero.

I can only grow on window sills as I'm in a flat.

Doing currant sweet pea cherry toms too.

The home grown, home seeded ones could be interesting... Last time we used them, Mrs Nod chopped a couple and used them on some butter braised chicory - ended up quite fiery so last night I deseeded one and chopped it very finely and used it in a tomato based pasta sauce. Not much less hot! They are pretty small - about 15mm long, Not Scotch Bonnets, more like "normal" pointed chillies in appearance. good flavour still, I reckon they're 3 or 4 years old.

Have you done the superhots before?.you may struggle to get right temps and humidity with those on a windowsil.

I am doing a lot more milder ones this year for cooking as the rest of the family dont like it too spicy!..I am also going to buy a dehydrator and dry a lot off for various things such as crushed flake and powders etc.

Stuart. Yes I have, but not in my new flat. Where they're positioned I think they should ripen ok fingers crossed.

Meant to add the guy I get my plants from has some well grown on ones similar to size in my pics(larger ones) that he needs to move on if anyone is interested.Mix of superhots and milder varieties.
