Anyone grow their own chillis?

Nice one they get huge lol

I know :)

I've grown hottish to hot chillis in previous years and my wife does some lovely things with them but I decided to go for something this year that was fun that the kids could get involved in without having to go to accident and emergency LOL

I'll let you know how they turn out.

Please do..I have gone balls out on the superhots but also a few milder ones as well for everyone to enjoy. Will be drying a lot and making my own powders and flakes.

I've still got dried ones and a cupboard full of chilli jam and chilli oils etc. I also just chuck a handfull in the freezer and they come in handy for cooking with.

The Big Jims should be quite flexible for cooking but I'll see how they go. Can't guarantee 12 inches though.

Jon Travolta does but its got a bit out of hand....

he's got chillies..... they're multiplying.... and he's losing control...

:coat:

Not sure which cultivar they are but at 3" and growing, I'm guessing they're not super hot (which suits me just fine!) IIRC, the seeds came from Wilko as a kit and were simply labelled as Chilli seeds. Might have to do some corrective surgery since the top 1/3rd or so seems to have been scorched beyond recovery. The lower branches have picked up after a day of soaking but the tops have stayed crispy! I'll give them a couple more days but will do the amputation before gangrene sets in.

I'm always VERY cautious when I use a new chilli for the first time - a tiny bit off the end (no seeds or pith!), try a fingertip of juice, then the tiny tip then use as I feel appropriate. Having had a rebore a few years ago, I have no intention of repeating the experience chemically!

:D I am looking to try one of everything I am growing at least.Sort of looking forward to it:confused: but after having bad cramps from having a load of super hot extract I am a bit wary but at least I know now how to line your stomach first this time!

Lots of pods forming now! If anyone wants to try any on the list I am growing drop us a pm and will happily send a couple out, think I am going to be overun with them lol

Just found some good size pods hidden on one plant!

No amputation necessary! Even the uppermost leaves have refilled and the tips are all shooting. A couple of the fruits have dropped off but many do anyway.

Plants are loving this weather!!..This scorpion Butch T is growing like crazy!Leaves are massive.

These are two of the more mature ones on my plants, but when is the right time to pick them? They are a very dark purple and about 5" long, I can't remember the variety unfortunately.

Possibly Chenzo ?

They can be black after green and before turning red.

Last year I went through a phase of trying super hot sauces and this year thought I would try and grow my own super hot chillies! Have a fair few on the go doing very well.
So far I have ..
Carolina reaper (hottest in the world)
Moruga scorpion red
Trinidad scorpion butch T
7 Pot primo
7 Pot brain strain
7 Pot yellow brain strain
7 Pot white
Jalepeno
Peach fatalii
Brown devils tongue
Bhut jolokia
Cheyenne
Hot Tomato
Sweet banana
Scotch bonnet
Nasu
Plus a few others I cant remember..All are growing on in a plastic greenhouse and doing great.Hoping to get some nice pods from them.

You have that many chillis already? You haven't been in to it for long! lol

First (unspecified) chilli turning red so should be ready in a day or 2.

Nice one Nod..I reckon my superhots will be ready maybe august /September time as they do take a little longer

I'm hoping for a mild tingle and a decent chilli flavour rather than real fiery afterburner type heat. About a dozen fruits on the bush, ranging from a few mm up to around 3".

Slightly OT but still in a horticultural vein, we ate the first home grown cucumber yesterday and I'm watching the Greek seed tomatoes swell almost visibly. The toms look like they're going to be fairly true to the mother fruit so should be ugly but taste like tomatoes grown commercially over here don't!

I have a few milder ones on the go as well plus some tomatoes and bell peppers.

Quick update..everything is growing like mad at the mo.Sorry for crappy phone vid but click on HD its a bit better.Copper slug tape is working a treat as is new slug trap. Cant believe size of the scotch bonnets, they are first two plants at the entrance on right hand side.

Well, the first chilli is now all a lovely red colour so ready for harvesting! Since I'm such a considerate and generous husband, I'll let Mrs Nod have the first taste and get her to report back on the fieriness (or mildness/flavour) of them before testing them myself!!! Have to admit that I did half wonder if the thing was going to turn out to be more like a Romano type sweet pepper but it's not long enough for that, just quite long for a chilli.

Does it count as growing them if a plant randomly popped up and you haven't killed it yet?? lol!

Few pics..first jalepeno doing great!

Then cheyenne doing even better

Hot tomato coming on now

and the nasu

..and nearly all my superhots have flowered up well along with the mammoth scotch bonnet plants. This is one of my bhut jolokia plants with lots of flowers and think couple of pods forming

Not updated for a while..
Yesterday I cleaned out my self watering pot reservoirs, some had got some nice thick green gunk growing in them. I've had a bit of yellow leaves and flower drop (lost a fruit the other today too) so I figured it was time to act. I think it's why I only have 2-3 fruit per plant forming.
Deployed some black bin bags over the white lids.
oh and been battling SLUGS :bat:

Despite this the Aji's continue to form loads of flowers still and those chillis that have fruited are going well:

Looking good gents..Neil the slugs are a major pain but the copper tape worked wonders for me as did a few night patrols! Go out about midnight with a torch and you'll be amazed,I caught over 20 the other night despite having home made beer traps down(havent caught one in them)..so I trawled amazon and found a slug trap called slug x,basically a beer trap with lid and three reservoirs inside.Gave it ago and it certainly works! 7 on the first night and 3-4 every night since...going to get a few more.

lol yeah I know my greenhouse is like a jungle but it certainly helps..nearly all the ones with tape round have hardly been touched since.Other pain is earwigs!..they have a munch but dont seem to do major damage.

Touch wood, I don't have a slug problem here - at least not in the conservatory! Plenty outside and I'm afraid I use bird/pet friendly pellets to control them. They still manage to get at the courgettes but we still get plenty of fruits so I'm not too worried.

View attachment 15941 Oops! Just noticed that the shot I posted is 90° off kilter! Hopefully this wider shot is vertical. If not, They'll have to wait until I use the big computer upstairs!

Seems to have done so! It also shows a few other chillis on the plant but since they're not ripe, they're not popped!
