Anyone got the Nikon 105mm f/2.8D Macro?

Just wondering how it compares in real life to the newer VR models.
 
ive got the 105mm VR version which is excellent but was told the old version is very good also
 
thanks for the reply :) Aye, it gets decent reviews and is roughly a third cheaper than the new model. I suppose the question should really be can the new VR model justify the price difference? :thinking:
 
Are you intending to use it for Macro ?
If so I find the VR a right pain and have it turned off.
 
Mainly macro, already got the 85mm F1.8 so would use that most of the time for non macro stuff.
 
I think the main crit on the VR version for using full time on macro stuff is the zoom creep when you move through the focussing range - You can compose a shot, but then you find you have to recompose once you've focused, but then have to focus again, and, er, re-compose, er...

Well you get what I mean. It's supposed to be the main gripe of this lens, if being used primarily for macro stuff.

I have the lens, but don't use it for macro. It's super sharp, and fast focussing, and I like it a lot. :D
 
I hand hold for macro too, sometimes waiting for the VR to settle means you lose the shot, as for lens creep, never noticed it :shrug:
 
I personally find the VR a massive help on the 105mm and wudnt be without it after using my mates 60mm lens without vr as for when it come to handheld shots of insects etc it really helps!

Yep, as well as the 105, the 105 would put more money in the till but the 90mm Tamron gets the most play time in store when we have a few quiet moments! When I come to get my macro it would take a great deal to shake me off the 90mm :thumbs:

It also works with my Nikon 2X TC so in my opinion the VR model is worth the investment.
 
I have the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D Micro and I find it superb for macro. Check out some of my shots HERE (note: some are taken with a Raynox DCR-250 on the front end of it!).

It's very sharp with nice colour rendition. The auto-focus is quite slow as it's highly geared for accuracy, but I don't find this a problem for macro shots as I tend to manual focus anyway.

I've thought about getting the newer VR version from time to time, but don't really see that I'd gain much in exchange for a lot more money!
 
thanks for that Dave, a macro lens is the last thing I'm looking for as replacement for my canon kit. I'm struggling to justify the extra cost as well and looking at your gallery pretty much confirms my thoughts :)

Not much more to add: I also have the 105VR and use it hand held for macro, I just rattle a few shots off in quick succession. Focus breathing can be an issue, although that's a common trait I would imagine!

Fantastic lens, well worth the money. Ridiculously sharp, you get spoiled and used to the resolution, so a warning: you may want sharper lenses throughout the range after using it :)
 
My favourite lens, oozes quality and I find the VR useful for doing more general stuff other than macro.
