Anyone got a Spare $1/4 million?

Great idea Mr Snap, I'll check my piggy bank :D

Let me see what I've got behind the sofa cushions!

Ooh, just found a pound in my drawer, I'll throw it in a big glass jar to start off the collection.

I think it might be a little more difficult than you might think. In case nobody has already seen it, watch this old Kodak film to see how film is made (it's from c.1958):

Part 1:

Part 2:

Obviously technology has moved on since then, but its roughly the same principal.

Cool, looks a doddle. I've got a big shed we can put them in, shall we get a couple to be on the safe side? We can work shifts producing many and varied interesting films, sell them for a lot of money and retire on the proceeeds, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

h'mm would that include the chemicals to make film or is it Kodak's secret, as if you get the full works then the Chinese could dump their lucky film and use this.

loonies the lot of you ! ,,,,,,,,i'll see what i've got in the penny jar then ,,,,,,,,,,,oh sweet fanny adams ,wasn't that an album by the sweet ???

Is it like Polaroid? The equipment was sold but not the process, so it's taken impossible a few years to get something stable

We'd better find a good supply of incredibly pure silver from somewhere, or a suitablely massive supply of analytical grade silver bromide as well...

Gutted, no Buy It Now!

Silver is easy. Johnson matthey sell it. It's where ilford get theirs from :)

Will it run off of an ordinary 3 pin plug?

How much spent fixer have we got kicking around between us?

think they had issues finding the old recipies and alot of the ingredients are illegal or unavalible now

I'll have a look in the dodgy cupboard of unlabelled chemicals at the back of the lab, who knows what we might find in there...

When Kodak patented Kodachrome, they published a full recipe for it, available to anyone who viewed the patent. Sadly a lot of their chemicals were synthesised by Kodak themselves so getting hold of them outside of their operation would need a talented chemist, lots of precursor chemicals and a load of serious equipment.

So it may be that the impossible project basically had to start from scratch with just the recipe and make their own chemicals/ outsource to a commercial lab whilst avoiding the use of illegal chemicals (which is an entirely different minefield as every country has a different blacklist)

Problems, problems, problems..... Think outside of the box people. Silver... easy, I shall get Roberts to melt down all the salvers from the kitchens and the candelabra from the dining room, chemicals, well I leave that up to the scientists.

There, I've done my bit... now get those films made people.

A friend of mine is a chemist. Works for ICI I think...

So who has a garden shed this thing will fit in?

Well it's the silver which makes the silver nitrate, and then subsequently silver bromide so we either have to obtain silver, or get the silver bromide from Sigma-Aldrich or somewhere.

If you take a look at the video I posted, you'll discover that the coating facility is 5 storeys high, so I think we'll need a nice big (light tight!) building as well.

The bell tower in Frustycrusty Hall is over 10 stories high. I shall have Roberts drape the inside with black velvet and move the ropes out of the way.

Bad news I'm afraid, I've just looked on APUG where they were discussing about this, and Photo Engineer (who's very well known there and worked for Kodak for years) has recently made posts which confirmed my suspicions that their NOT actually film coating machines, their designed for coating the acetate film base on which the emulsion is subsequently coated (by another machine entirely!). Kodak are selling these as they've stopped making acetate base (they've apparently got enough to last for years, and then they'll buy it from outside)

See the thread on APUG http://www.apug.org/forums/forum390/131483-kodak-coating-lines-sale.html

Kodak have abandonned the Kodachrome patent so anyone can have a go if they like.

Personally, I think anything which someone worked out in the past can be worked out again.

Steve.

I never said it couldn't be done Steve, I simply pointed out the issues that would have to be overcome

I've still got one of these in a loft somewhere http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/45/9a/de/459aded19c14a27076ef1b3af1d424af.jpg

I'll dig it out over the weekend and see what I can come up with, how difficult can it be?

I had one of them too ...or very similar .....my mother informs me that having no patience to read and learn what to do, i simply mixed all sorts of chemicals and stunk our home out! .......set me up good for home developing though didn't it! :D

First we'll need to actually get hold of a coating machine though (in case anyone missed my post from earlier today)

When you say 'coating machine' do you mean something like a paintbrush?
