Was thinking of 400mm from a rooftop
Have just recced the area and it looks like I'll have to get amongst 'em or i'll be cordoned off by the police barricades. Talking to a security lad and he reckons the police have got it all sewn up. Hmm....we shall see......

Did you make it along? I got a few shots but was being a bit cautious. There was a local photographer got attacked for taking a picture of an arrested protester.
Whilst walking back to my car I was surrounded by around 5 or 6 protesters angry about me having a camera also, I kept my walk on and made it somewhere safe. Lets just say the language to me was colourful, and I was actually bricking it.
I can't understand why they got angry at me though. I said I was an amateur photographer, more interested in the Police operation than trying to incriminate people from either side of the protest. I'm a white british male and still they very nearly got physically violent. After today i'm not sure I know what they stand for.

Words can't really express my opinion of these guys - or rather they can, but not the ones that I'm limited to on TP. They were marching today in London as something else, but I'm not going to name it because it'll get cached by Google.
I was following up on something in Parliament Sq, sitting on the edge of the raised paving, taking a picture of one of the tents that are left, when 8 of the idiots walked into the back of the frame, well out of focal distance.
At first they just swore about cameras, but then as they walked past one of them leaned down, ran his thumb across my throat and said "Next time it'll be a blade".
It's probably lucky, in more ways than one, that there was a copper walking behind the group warding them off the square.
AFAIC this subspecies don't represent my country or anything that it stands for.

This happened just yesterday also? I can't believe they did that. Even though it is clear that you are not incriminating anyone. I haven't been physically touched by anyone who has disagreed with me having the hobby of photography. It's a real shame such a thing happened to you.

Yep,
I got into town about 10am. Really early for the protests but I wanted to get a feel for the place before it all kicked off. The best description I would give it was tense - very tense. Having said that I had a chat with several policemen and women and the general gist of what they said was "we've got it all sewn up". Any by and large I would say they did have it very well managed. The TUC marchers were kept well away from the protesters and according to news reports only minor issues arose.
What bothered me most was that I got a fair bit of abuse as I went about my photography. Very dirty looks, abusive/threatening language etc etc. Clearly these folks didn't want pictures being taken. But, my point remains - without the media, these protests go largely unnoticed. So they need the likes of us to publicise their message. A case of wanting the cake and eating it I think.
Sorry to hear of your experiences David. I suspect I would have got the same if I'd stayed longer. I left just before the actual march after my other half begged me to come away.
I also noticed a few of the national newspapers photographers were there too. They were all equipped with what looked like cylcing helmets and seemed to be glued to each other. They certainly didn't seem prepared to be alone.
What amazed me more was that a bunch of the protesters happily posed for the local evening telegraph photographer. I really didn't get that.
And finally - if you go on the protesters website you'll find a link to their forum. And there you'll find similar posed photos. Bizarre!

No peak so you can still hold your camera to your face, chin strap so it doesn't fall off Very little, and what they do is mostly fuelled by the white lightning they've just guzzled.
