Anyone getting an iPad?

Limited to 20 feeds though, and doesn't sync with Google Reader (like Early Edition).

Whilst waiting for Reeder I'm using NewsRack.

It does sync with Google Reader...hence Lara Jade.

Not sure about 20 Feeds maximum mind you.

Tiny fingers for the keyboard too I hope

dont need tiny fingers, just accurate ones...ask anyone whos had an email from me, they all make perfect sense...:|

 I have.... AND it was after Matty had been out for a hot curry and a few cooling beers :naughty:

I ended up buying one yesterday, was going to wait but couldn't resist. Absolutly loving it :D

I decided to go with o2 data plan - £10 for 1gb every 30 days

I knew the signal was ok where I frequent as I have the iPhone on o2 also

You can set up the whole data plan on your iPad

Is 1G enough?

I bought o2's 1day 500mb and found that I went through 70mb in 1 day and I was only using edge! On that average I would need around 2G a month.

I went with 3 and I must say I am so I impressed with their coverage, train from Birmingham to Hereford ro Cardiff, good 3G sigmsl 90% of the time which moving at 70mph over country sides.

Oh and I get 10G allowance too, £15 a month.

just a heads up, both cardiff and birmingham apple store have the camera connection kit instock.

I managed to track down stock of the official Apple case last week, I was using a silicone case beforehand. Functionally, I've not seen anything better than the Apple case, not whilst keeping the whole lot fairly slim.

I have the apple case, it's ok, but I dont think there is anything better. I like to use it at home out of a case as it looks and feels better, but I am happy that in the case it feels safe to use out the house. I too did not want anything big and bulky.

I think i'll get one.
as has been discussed elsewhere, the wife can use it to play big fish games, we can stick it on a headrest mount for my son to watch films on long journeys, and i can use it as a portfolio if i wish

can anyone confirm as to whether the iphone can be used as the wifi access point for the Ipad???... with no extra charges etc

Yes but only if you jailbreak the iPhone and install MiWi.

well looks like HP, ASUS and MSI are already jumping on the bandwagon and unveiling there tablet pc's. wonder what they'lll be like, i know that the MSI will have the power of a netbook with the design of the ipad so it should be good.

It's the software that'll make or break tablets though. Be interesting to see how an Android tablet works out.

MSI showed off their tablet in December if I remember correctly, HP showed theirs off about a month before Apple. Asus on the other hand have seen all the tablets on display and jumped, definately. Funny really as they were the company that "invented" the netbook, you'd think they would have had a slate device before the other big manufacturers.

It still amazes me how on paper, other manufacturers may beat the apple products hands down

But the whole apple experience cannot be beaten - you can't deny that they usually get it pretty spot on

They still haven't got a product on sale. My guess is that their still trying to get something with enough power to run Windows - and failing.

I know that the Ipad is not totally suitable for satnav, but as anyone tried anything like Tomtom ?

Here is my 2p on the topic.

I am niether an Apple fan boy, nor an Apple hater. I use PC's mainly because this is what I started with. I have two brothers who work in creative fields (theatre and music) and both of them swear by Macs, sneer at my PC but love my photography and design work. I also have a media suite full of macs at school and was provided with a macbook when I arrived at the school and it is here that I have my misgivings about Apple - beautiful products but what do they do that a PC doesn't?

Which brings me onto the Ipod touch / Iphone/ Ipad - here, in my world, is something different which has the potential to impact on my photography work. I am about to go through the process of renewing my portfolio books (3 in total) to the tune of £450. With an Ipad I can do this more regularly and with increasingly less expense. I have yet to have a serious play with one but if they can do all the fabulous things as suggested in this thread then I will be buying an Apple product for the first time!!!

Spooks

I have TomTom and NDrive on my iPhone. Tried them both on the iPad and NDrive seems to work OK but TomTom says I need to connect to an external GPS. My guess it's that TT's idiot programmers (and they do seem to have a lot of them) just assumed that the iPad wouldn't have proper GPS. And they're half right; the WiFi only version doesn't have GPS (it does have other positioning methods, but they're not sccurate enough). But the 3G iPad does do proper, real GPS. Maybe TomTom will bring our an update, but I doubt it.

I don't have any sat nave program but I have tired maps and it is really accurate, it was showing the dot moving the car when pulling into the drive!

I'll have a word with my mate who is one of Tom Tom's "idiot programmers" I know they both flavours of iPad for testing. I assume you're testing on a 3G iPad.

I know people keep having a dig at it but today i finally managed to get a hold of the apple case for ipad. I actually really like it!

Thanks to smoothedit for the case you gave me! I'm still using it for when i have to dump my ipad in to another bag for a journey as it offers good protection. However in the home and office im using the apple case due to the fact it keeps the form factor really slim.

Apple case is functionally great, slim, protects it well, and the stand works great.

Only downside is that it gets grubby really easy and generally just looks scruffy most of the time. Still...better the case than what's in it :)

Re : TomTom....didn't the TomTom iPhone cradle for the car include another GPS receiver as the built-in one on it's own wasn't accurate enough?

Finally decided I want one regardless of the price (despite earlier saying I wouldn't want to pay more than £300 for the cheapest) so rang the Milton Keynes store to see if they've got the 16Gb wifi in stock.

Nothing, nada. B*gg*r :(

lucky escape then...

take it as an omen and buy something useful instead..

16GB is not a lot of space for movies, pics and the like... On my 64gb there is 'only' 59gb of space to use, so would guess the 16gb is nearer 12gb in reality.

Sorry I missed this - and you are more than welcome dude!

I am looking the look of the dodo case and belkin folio. Hmmmmm decisions!

A guy at work's DODOCase turned up the other day, very impressive thing - can't wait to get mine! (longest 6 weeks ever :D)

Don't see it as an issue really. I'm currently using an 8gb ipod touch and its got about 2gb worth of bits and pieces on there.
I'm not the type to carry around hundreds upon hundreds of music tracks or dozens of movies.

I should think there will be 10gb free to use on it which is plenty for me.

I bought the 64Gb / 3G purely because thanks to it being built by Apple it can't be upgraded :bang:

I'd hate to have spent the money on the 16Gb / WiFi version only to run out of space before iPad 2.0 appears ......

Ok, so we got an iPad, yes I know the pros and cons but for us it is an invaluable tool

The only thing I wanted was CHEAP Reliable Data over the 3G Network,

We looked at the packages that you could get when you purchase the iPad and ruled them out,

I already had a t-mobile uk PAYG sim card in my netbook (Has a sim card slot in it), although technically out of a PAYG phone rather than a Data sim it works fine, and here is the bonus

On PAYG t-mobile have a little talked about 6 Months unlimited data for £20 option (You top up by £20 and text a code to t-mobile who deduct the £20 and activate the unlimited data for 6 months), at the end of the 6 months rinse and repeat as required.

Yes there are are restrictions,

1: It is truly unlimited for web browsing and email, they impose a 1gb a month limit on downloads and streaming like youtube, after 1gb they slow the connection on the downloads to a very low limit but web and email are unaffected. (To be honest in the 9 months I have had it on my netbook I have never been capped)

Now the problem its a normal sim card not an ipad micro sim, well I got a pair of sissors trimmed it down looking at a picture of the micro sim and bobs your whatsit it fits, and works like a dream.

Had one in my iPad for over a month and its superb, allows me to link to galleries on my websites and show images etc, has to be one of the best add ons for the iPad you can get

£20 for 6 Months Internet, with very few restrictions and no contract, doubt there is anything out there to get close

http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/payg/boosters/

Above is a link to the info on the t-mobile website, if anyone wants to see the cut down sim to get an idea of where to trim it let me know.

you would think that something that is meant to emulate a laptop, it would have more memory etc. I would only consider one if they made it with a Firewire port (the quick look in the shop didn't reveal one)...

But then again, even playing with it, I can't help but feel all that they have done is taken an iPhone and stuck it in an enlarging device...

It's an iPhone on steroids (but without the voice call).

The frustrating bit with it is that it could do so much more but Apple have declined to give us that functionality. Maybe they were worried it would steal sales from their Laptops

If you are comparing the iPad to laptops and mobile phones, then I'm afraid you are simply unable to grasp the point of the device.

The fact it is NOT a laptop, and NOT a mobile phone, is the reason it's flying off the shelves.

I was a sceptic, albeit a sceptic with enough money to buy such toys on a whim....but after using it a while you see it's real value. Playing with it in a shop won't change your preconceptions.
