Anyone getting an iPad?

Well, I have now picked up mine. Apple in Cambridge had sold out of all of them (was hoping for the 32gb) but PC World have 16 and 64gb left. Went for the non 3g one!

I bought the digital photographer app yesterday and reading a magazine on it was an awesome experience. The actual app needs some work, the gestures aren't quite right yet, but zooming in and out of images and text in the magazine was awesome.

Just tried that and it seems to be struggling a bit, I paid for the app which seems to come with one edition of the mag, when I double click on it on the shelf, it says "downloading sorry for the delay - this page will be available shortly", then crashes...

That's not good. It downloaded no problems for me

Not all business users need to integrate with other business users. MobileMe, Pages, Number and Keynote are powerful tools and in some respects more powerful than their MS counterparts.

Office HD is available for a fiver - can edit and save .doc and .xls files.

I found the first couple of apps I installed were a bit flaky and didn't work properly until i deleted and re-installed them. The Times in particular was playing up. Had the same problem with my iphone strangely....all working fine now though.

Picked mine up yesterday - had the day off Friday and got up early with the intention of standing in line at 8am, but decided I would probably be unlucky

Walked straight into the Currys superstore yesterday at 9.30 and they still had each flavour in stock

Seems that there is a fair amount of stock floating around the UK, I really did expect shortages after launch day.

I have read the previous posts regarding the point of such a device, and for me it comes down to the following:

1. Try reading an ebook on an iPod touch or iPhone for extended periods - screen res and size/weight of the iPad is just right
2. I have a netbook, an iPhone and a full blown pc - the iPad is designed to compliment one or more of these NOT replace.
3. Ebook readers are very poorly implemented at the moment - apart from the e-ink screens perhaps
4. Newspapers and magazines with rich full colour content formatted perfectly for the iPad screen
5. With the USB/SD Card add-on I will be able to view and backup my shots on location
6. Personally, I find Apple devices superb, the whole experience is second nature.

Whether he actually said it or not is irrelevant but there's a Henry Ford quote that I think sums up Apples philosophy very well...

"If I had asked my customers what they wanted, they would have said faster horses"

That's actually one of my favourite quotes on my facebook :D

For people reading magazines, try Wired magazine. One edition is 500mb of content lol. Its amazing.

Ordered mine today from the Apple Web-site ETA 3-4weeks!!!
It'll be a long wait

P.s. I need a thesaurus, I used the word awesome far too many times, i even irritated myself when I read it back

dictionary.com do a free app for the iPhone, presumably that would work with the iParchment (sic) as well?

Argh! Could cancel- peeps like Pcworld and currys should have stock...?

Apple in Cambridge were out of stock on all today. They claim they dont know when they will get more stock in. PC World had 10 or so (but no 32gb ones), so if people are looking try PC World or large Currys.

Must admit I went and had a look at one at Dixons in Manchester airport today, not for me I think.

Maybe too entrenched in Microsoft. I will stick to my PC, Laptop and Netbook. All read and write the way I want, all run the software that came with all my kit, and all do well the functions I require them too.

I would however say that it was a nice peice of kit, and a great toy. I just feel I would be selling it on ebay before too long. I've trawled the web and youtube looking at videos and reports and I reckon unless your an Apple nut you just wouldn't get it.

Just my observations :D

It's my first and only apple product... And I couldn't imagine life without it after a month of using it :)

The 3G models seem to have sold out most places now, you can get wifi models plenty of places though.

Main problem is that everywhere has sold out of the decent cases ! I wanted an Apple case but they are on a 3-4 week lead time and sold out everywhere now :( got a silicone one on at the moment but want something to protect the screen while it's in my bag.

Anyone bothered with a screen protector?

The apple case seems suspiciously cheap feeling but it really has stood up to the mark for me - I feel confident putting it in my bag with lotso other stuff with only that covering it.

I bought one of these. Wasn't cheap, but is great quality. Can act as a stand for the iPad in both Portrait and Landscape oreientations. Out of stock at Amazon, but may be available elsewhere.

Every time I see the screen with it switched off I see all the fingerprints and think I need a protector. Then I switch it on and all those prints disappear, so I decide I'm better off without.

I was desperate for a case so found a seller on ebay knocking out genuine cases for £60 - twice the price in the apple store. While I felt silly buying one, I would rather get it in a case asap and pay over the odds than damage the ipad. Although I now believe Cancom have some in stock now.

Chris - it's a fantastic piece of kit..... I played with it for an hour in Florida, then placed my order when I got back. It's just so much more useable than anything Microsoft, and as you know I spend all my life supporting Microsoft products :D:D

PS the books in the post - sorry for the delay.

I can't wait until my Dodocase arrives.

Nice!! What holds it in Ray?

Edit: Just watched the vids and it is the foam corners that hold it in.

The guy recommends 'not turning it upside down and shaking it'!

Saweeet!

Will you do a review for us? Those cases look swish!

Why would you want to shake it? lol

Mine should be with me in about a week

I shake mine a little to get the screen to orient sometimes.

If you buy the 3G and have an iPhone does that mean you could end up paying two £35 a month subscriptions? What's the deal with that? Seems expensive. Can anyone clarify?

*caugh wink nudge nudge* you could use the iPhone as an access point.

Although it would..erm... mean a slight tweak to the iPad..... :suspect:

3 offers 10G bandwidth a month for £15, or 1G for £7.50.

3 have the best data network by a long shot, only downside is no wifi included.

Agree I only pay one £35 per month and both devices work on 3G no problems ;)

i have iphone and 20/20 vision. works for me until such time as I have stupid amounts of money to spend.

PULSE - £2.39 - News/ RSS reader

This is the main page, you flick down for more "channels", each horizontal line is 1 feed, and flick sideways to see older posts, and when you do that, only THAT line is moving, the rest stays stationary on the page.

You can read the feed mostly text or like it on its original site, for example here. Depends if the feed or story you are reading is a text rich or photo rich content.

tap the bottom left (blue triangle) and the feed's thumbnail bar will pop up again.

Limited to 20 feeds though, and doesn't sync with Google Reader (like Early Edition).

Whilst waiting for Reeder I'm using NewsRack.
