Anyone getting an iPad?

It does have USB. That's how you sync it, and the camera kit uses USB.

2. E-Sata

Why do you want E-SATA on a tablet

3. memory card slot

I'm surprised it doesn't have an SD slot, but the camera kit gives you that anyway.

4. larger solid state drive

It has 64GB on the largest model. You do realise how expensive flash memory is?

5. Flash capability

Yawn. Why? Most sites are moving away from flash and have non-flash versions now anyway.

6. Multitasking

Why so you can have a flat battery in an hour like an android based device? It's coming in OS4 and I bet we see a drop in battery life. Although the only use I can come up with it so far is so you can have an IM client running.

7. Ethernet

It's called WiFi and the iPad has it. I think that's ethernet if I'm not mistaken?

Come on Apple move with the times and stop ripping us off!!!!!!!!

Don't buy one, then they haven't ripped you off at all...

I quite like the idea, just don't like the price.

Why did this thread have to be hijacked by Apple haters? If you don't like Apple don't by their products.

This thread would be more far more useful and constructive if it was filled with constructive feedback about the devise to help people decide if they want to buy one.

Barney

I don't think the title helps, it asks are you buying an iPad, thus asking for answers from people who are and aren't.

There's nothing wrong with people saying why or why not it's the feeling that those who aren't are somehow puzzled by those of us that are like we've been brainwashed by apple and how can we be so stupid to buy a device that doesn't have every single feature under the sun.

But as the genius of Stephen fry says:

One turd spoils the whole bath.*You cannot say to someone about to lower themselves in, ‘Don’t be a wimp, it’s only a small turd, the rest of the water is crystal clear.’

Well the price has nothing to compare it to, this is the first of it's kind so it's always going to be overpriced.

Remember nobody else has brought a product like this to market. Look at the price of Microsoft surface. It's ludicrous, but are their lots of other products on te market like it?

When other tablets come out the price will start to drop of course. This is very typical of a brand new category

It does though Joe.

I can look at a netbook and view images, use it for storage, store music blah, blah blah. Now, I know they're two totally different products and if the Ipad is anything like the touch the ipad will do what it does far better than the netbook. It doesn't do everything the netbook does either though and it's a lot more expensive.

At this stage, the benefits of ease of use, better operation (?), touch screen etc aren't important enough for me to justify spending £500.

I'm definitely not an apple hater but I am tight :p

You don't actually need multitasking for IM. I use IM+... try it and see for yourself :)

As for arguing with people who have strong opinions without having either researched the product properly or tried one... why do you waste your time?

You are comparing what you can do on a product not the actual product. That's like comparing a mobile phone with a landline because they can both make calls or a motorbike to a car because they both get you from a to b. The fact is they are different actual products and as a product you can't compare e iPad to another media tablet.

Until another one comes out in the same product category there is no comparison on price to be made

Having looked at my earlier postings in here, perhaps I might have come across as being a little on the arrogant side and was quick to slate the iPad (now I've seen the tampon joke, I can't get that out of my head every time the iPad gets mentioned!).

It's really a question of how useful it would be when you take into account your personal circumstances.

Take mine for instance. When I'm at home, it's just me and an elderly mum in the house and I'm pretty much an indoor person, so all my computing needs are carried out on a Windows PC, I show off my photos via the interweb as I know it reaches out to a wider audience. It would be a complete waste of time if I get an iPad to show off photos to other people because I don't really know that many people . . . especially those interested in the world of digital photography.
Workwise, the thing would be completely and utterly useless if I want to use it for surfing the internet as I work in a greenhouse right out in the sticks. Heck I can't even a radio signal, never mind a wifi one, and I'm not fully prepared to shell out more money for 3G connectivity which doesn't seem to be any faster than 56K dial ups speeds!
If I want to read the news, I'd get a paper or check out a website using my PC. Magazines, you just can't beat the traditional paper format, just pick it up, no batteries and boot up needs, flick through it and then put it down, and I like to collect them once I'm done (usually railway ones).
I couldn't read anything on a computer . . . any computer . . . for too long anyway as the glare emitting from the screen becomes too much after a while, especially when I come across web sites that uses white lettering in a black background!

So, at the end of the day its all about keeping things in perspective, and hence why I'm not falling for the "Walt Disney" effect that Apple seem to be good at. And I most certainly don't want to shell out the equivalence of a month's wages for something that would probably end up as being a five minutes wonder.

Mind you, the iPad (snigger) wouldn't look out of place in a Star Trek The Next Generation episode (and they are called PADD . . spooky!) and that is cool in itself.

iPad + Me = WANT !! I just know I won't be able to put the thing down. Nearly got funds. It's overtaken everything else I need, just GOTTA have it !

That's a fair enough point but it is the output that concerns me most so from that point of view the price is a consideration for me :)

I'm really not trying to be awkward as I bought the Ipod Touch and it's at the same time the best gadget I've got and the most useless and annoying :p I really like the way it works and that everything is available with a couple of presses. At the same time I hate the way I can't use it if I'm parked up somewhere. The HTC TD2 I have allows me access to everything I want, when I want, but it's not nearly as nice to use.

The iphone would have been ideal I suppose, but again, it's more expensive that the HTC.

Its funny how all devices have these love and hate sides. Guess it is all part of the fun.

Had some friends around this afternoon, it was all very nice, BBQ and drinks in the garden. The iPad came out and got passed around, people looked at my snaps, and other stuff on it. It's the only device I have had that allows others to look at photos when they are in control without needing guidance.

Typing into it now, I'm getting to like it...

This is the thing.... what do you want it for ? As an image display device its over kill but as a work device its under powered etc.

For me personally I want a tablet but I want the tech and the price to match its use - in other words the concepts good its just the implementation of it I'm not sure about.

BTW - Re the comment re flash storage. It is very expensive and also needs a number of special algorithms to make sure it does not ware out in any place... I just looked at getting 2tb for work and that would have cost £60k in 400mb units.

Despite my reservations, I ended up getting a 64gb 3G model at the weekend.....

I was firmly in the sceptic camp, but after using it for a couple of days, I've changed my mind somewhat. The laptop that used to live in the living room is now being given to my parents and being replaced with the iPad.

For a general internet device around the house, it's unparalleled. You can say what you like about net books being cheaper and more flexible.....but ( having owned an NC10)...they are bulky, cumbersome and the screen is too small for a decent web experience, compared to the iPad.

I love it....the only major problem at the moment is a lack of background IM capability (before you say it, no, the bodged notification thing with Im+ and ebuddy doesn't cut it)... But that should be resolved with the OS update.

It would be nice if it supported flash, if only for viewing the BBC site.....ok a lot of video is on YouTube, but a lot of it isn't.

Typing on it is surprisingly easy. Ive tapped out this reply only fractionally slower than touch typing on my laptop :)

Question.....if I get the camera connection kit, can I plug the 5d2 in and view the RAWs directly? Would be nice to use as a quick preview for people without going through the whole light room process.....

I guess it would, but would probably suggest you take as RAW and JPG and view JPG as they will be better.

Get beejiveim, it stays logged in the background even when you exit. And a MSG pops up like a text message when you get one.

Yes it does and no it doesn't.

There is nothing unique about the iPad, other than the marketing it has received compared to the other slate/tablets...

Price wise full OS versions usually range from £300-£600 and mobile OS ones range from £200-£400.

Personally I just think Apple copied a load of the other products, after all they were one of the last to show theirs off!:p

Nowadays it's almost totally irrelevant. Who doesn't have WiFi but only a wired network?

People who don't have wifi routers?

I want to buy a tablet, just not the first one that come along that just happens to have an expensive PR campaign. That would be foolish. I'm going to wait to see what the competitors have to offer. I find that more exciting.

I too am waiting until some competitors are on the market before I make a final decision.. I'm not anti Apple, but there might be something better round the corner :p

Check out #8, the ICD Vega, coming to T-mobile, apparently :suspect:, but only 2g, which is pretty pointless (it's in the video :))

EDIT: And it apparently supports Flash, for all those that care :D

Yup, there are dozens being released and already released. It's the form factor of the year, with first the couple of dozen slates shown at CES (those 9 were all displayed there), the HP slate (which will now not be running Win7) and then trailing in the end the iPad...

Personally if I get a slate it'll probably be the Hanvon touchpad which was released a couple of months ago in Japan and should be released here shortly. The slightly less powerful one (not yet released) is going to have an active digitiser as well as capacitive screen so pen use for Photoshop is on the cards! :D

Just had an another thought. If I win the lottery, I'll buy a job lot of iPads and line the bathroom wall with them. Probably wouldn't be able to use the shower but by gum it would make for an awesome mosiac when they are all switched on!

What other tablets? HP have abandoned Windows for the Slate. Microsoft have cancelled the Courier. So what's available now?

After a quick Google -
  • The Archos 9. Amazon reviews say it's slower than a dead snail giving a hippo a piggy-back through treacle.
  • Samsung Q1. An 800 MHz processor running Win XP.
  • Lenovo X201. Now that looks usable, though heavy. Shame it's £1400!! And that most Windows programs won't work with the multi-touch interface.
We'll have to see if the Eee Pad or Portege can manage to run a bloated OS at anything like a sensible speed - my money is on 'No'.

People who don't have wifi routers?

So Apple should have added an ethernet port just for the 0.1% of the population who have broadband but are either too cheap or too stupid to add WiFi?

I want to buy a tablet, just not the first one that come along that just happens to have an expensive PR campaign. That would be foolish.

Why do you suddenly want to buy a tablet? After all, they've been around for nearly 20 years (the very first IBM Thinkpad was a tablet). So why now?

Yes, you can, I was doing just that this very morning. Can't seem to view video straight off the camera though (unless I've missed something).

Who said that? Because I didn't. Neither did I suggest it. I merely answered your question.

Because 20 years ago I was 9 years old and not interested in photography. Now I am. So looking for a good solution to present my photography instead of carrying a laptop everywhere would be nice. But that doesn't mean my only option is to buy an iPad. Not sure what your point is.

Can you view in full res or just thumbnail? I saw a post recently somewhere saying that they could only view the thumbnails which is odd. I'm sure that's just a software issue though.

You can only view the thumbnail if you don't import the files (i.e with the camera plugged in) but once they're imported you can see them full size. It even knows how to deal with RAW+JPG which i was quite surprised about.

On a side note, I'm surprised this thread has stayed open so long! ;)

So the others have a fully integrated app store, book store and music store too then?

Cool, can you link me to one I've not come across any myself, but I haven't been looking.

Also, how many of these can I walk into a shop here in the uk and buy one tomorrow?

This is one of those turd posts I mentioned earlier with the Stephen fry quote

I'm sitting here reading all this. My chair is getting uncomfortable and there is a sofa behind me...
I'm not currently producing anything, just web browsing, I'm hardly pushing the iMac to its limits. I could go to the sofa and use the iPhone to browse, but it's not ideal with the small screen.
Suddenly the iPad makes a hell of a lot of sense to me, damn I hate Apple, because they get everything so right.

If you ever sit on the sofa and browse t'internet, you'll love one. Sure I've got a MacBook pro but it's heavy and has a tendency to toast my knackers

With raw files it will display the embedded jpeg. So it probably won't be at full resolution (I think it's only the 50D that has full-sized embedded images) and it will have any picture styles applied.
