Yes
Think they look amazing but unsure if I would get decent use out of it (already have imac, macbook and iphone)

Sat in bed reading your post on my iPad which arrived today! So forum reading in bed is one good use.

Have been watching a couple of Photoshop podcasts too!

There you go; two reasons!

I'm still considering it.

Thing is, by the time I make up my mind, then saving for one.. Apple would be announcing the next one and it will be outdated about 30 minutes after purchasing it

As far as I can see they are just a gimmick.

Ipod Touch for people with poor eyesight.

:D

Personally I love them because thats what apple do, they make you love a product you have no need for. However I dont see what a ipad can do what a Netbook can't.

I have to agree they do seem like a oversized iPod touch and there quite high priced imo for what they are, so for now i'll just stick with my iPod touch myself :)

Hmm I wouldn't say it was al, marketing driven.

My big and main love is the fact that it is an always on highly portable book/Internet/portfolio/games/email. You can pick it up and BAM within seconds you get whatever you need.

If they didn't cost the same price as a small laptop I could see the point, but at the moment it's an overpriced small computer with less than one third of the functionality at the same cost. I'm still looking at the 'droid alternatives ;)

Anyone know what the 3G set up will be?

I assume it means an extra subscription to a service provider or a 'bolt on' for your existing phone package meaning shelling out even more every month?

Wifi imo is pretty useless on these types of devices (unless you are at home) as you tend to struggle to find an open network anywhere.

Athough the gadget lover in me wants one....I don't really see any use for it. No Flash support makes it pretty useless as a rich internet device. My 13" macbook pro isn't *that* much bigger and is a million times more useful :)

i would if the price tag wasn't so large

I got mine today. A 3G model. Works brilliantly - some of the apps are superb. I'm typing on it now.;)

I'm getting mine tomorrow, am in canada at the moment and they come out here tomorrow, when did they release in UK? I notice the website ships in june but I'm guessing the stores released them earlier?

they're just a bigger version of the iPod/iPhone.

i would like one but cant justify the cost of one at the moment :)

I pre ordered one for 'work' hopefully it'll turn up soon...

Is it suitable for storing backing up photos on the move?

I'm hoping so, that's why I got one. Looks great for sorting pics, deleting and backing up

Definitely. But not just yet. SWMBO will do her nut if I get one just yet what with a new car coming today and a holiday booked. But.... I've been looking at 3G dongle options for European use. Now I wonder what the roaming costs are with a 3G iPad....

Of course, if the iPad could be used for sodding faceache, sorry, facebook, then she would have ordered one weeks ago.

I agree with most others, at the price I just cant see the value. I have an iphone which is used a hell of a lot, and at times the small screen can be a pain. But all that money for effectively a bigger screen... At £300 I would go for it.

Yes... Well maybe...

That all depends if TNT will actually try and deliver the one that I should have in my hands right now... Hate TNT, if only it'd come by UPS like the guy that sits next to me. I mean same destination, different courier, one delivers, one can't be arsed...

would like one but im not sure why i have to pay £130 more for the wifi3g64gig UK version than the U.S version???

I've become a mac geek over the last year or so to the point that I struggle with the college PC's. Will definitely get one but probably wait for the next generation.

$829 = £570

£570 + 17.5% VAT = £669

That makes it £30 more in the UK by my basic calculations :S

Thing is you lot.... Ipad great if you want to live in a locked down world and personally I wouldnt pay that much for it but hey - some people appreciate it..... ( back to topic ) there are a VERY large number of technically better Android tablet clones on the way out..... bigger storage, bluetooth, wifi, 3g, web cams etc, they have better processors ( see the Nividia Tegra as one example ), they will run Android and they will be a heck of a lot cheaper too..... btw - did I mention they run flash he he.

As some one on his second Android phone I can say its a good OS with lots of potential and I'm looking at getting one for every day use which can be also my CarPC, main email unit and bed side clock.... ( oh and you can customise the OS :) )

I have to say, Android makes me laugh. Yep there's some android tablets on the way, but you wont get 10hours battery life playing video out of them. A workmate has an android phone, and while it's more powerful in specs than my iPhone 3G, it's no better. And his battery life is down to a couple of hours if he doesn't keep an eye on the apps that are running.

I'm waiting to see these better android tablets though, especially as everyone says they'll be cheaper and better. If they stick an IPS screen in them I can say with certainty they wont be much cheaper. And if they get an OLED screen like the android phones I'll laugh too, because you still wont be able to use them outside despite it being "better"

Sorry I normally don't respond to these types of posts, but it's beginning to make me laugh when people bash Apple using Android as a comparison now.

If you recon you'll get 10 hours of video playing out of an ipad I think you'd be sorely disappointed

I will definitely be getting one when funds allow.

What makes me laugh more is the 'ZOMG, there is this device that isn't even out yet that I obviously haven't even seen let alone used and it is OMFG BETTER'

As Andy said in a prior post, I dont see the point of it.

I have a netbook which cost me peanuts to buy, it does internet, email, wifi, bluetooth, document processing, photo editing etc etc etc...................

The ipad to me is an over inflated ipod touch.
My solution, go to spec savers so you can read an ipod touch and also see clearly the ridiculous price apple want for the device in the first place.

Anyway, I give it 6 months tops before someone else brings out something better and put apple in the shade again.
;)

Its not Apple bashing ( although admittedly I do **coughflashcough** :D ) but I do think Android is a serious contender... Froyo ( 2.2 ) is stepping up the game and while its seen as a mobile phone OS it is in fact an OS that can be used on mobile devices.... a big difference.

I wont go in to the different devices on the way but there are some truly remarkable and far better devices like the Tmobile Vega which is due out.... 3 sizes available including a silly 15" device.

Clones make take a little longer but expect to see loads more 2.2 devices Q4 this year....

One thing I will say - if you own a MAC then the Ipad is a good device for you in the same way if you own a PC then Android devices are ( like Windows Mobile was ).

Terran

BTW - My Desire - a 1Ghz chip running every thing under the sun lasts ages eg 1.5 days... again on 2.1 so the increased MFLOPS that come with 2.2 should help my battery last longer

Cant print from them no USBslot no SD card slot somebody please tell me what from a photographers standpoint is the point of this overhyped epitomy of style over subsatnce

Pointless imo.

They had one on BBC new this morning and it crashed.

Nope!!

i've not read much about it, but does it just run like a big iphone, i.e. single apps only etc.?

Agree..

Me too - and upgraded the RAM so goes like a rocket.

 Loving this (acurate) Apple bashing..

;)

..and again.. and again.. and again.. Let's not mention the Zen or HTC Desire to name but a few things

those of us buying ipads are buying them because the experience of consuming content on them is better than an iphone and a netbook. thats what we are paying for. watching movies, surfing the net, looking at photos on a screen bigger than an iphone is more enjoyable. having something that boots up instantly, doesnt have to rest on your lap and has full multi touch is a better experience than a netbook.

thats why we're getting them.

the closed system and lower specs argument- for the things we want to do with them - these are unimportant. you either get that or you don't. simples

A quick question...if you purchase an app on the Iphone and that same app is compatible and available with the ipad do you have to buy it again or do you get to use it foc ?

Terran

i had one for a few days , and although they are nice , i wouldnt buy one myself. but im a technology minded person , so they just dont hit the spot for me , but saying that there is a market for them , the newspaper apps that are out are amazing, and i can see that taking off in a big way

As far as I know, its free providing its all backed up using the same iTunes account. Might be at a lower resolution if it was an app designed for the iPhone, but can be put on the ipad for nothign.
