Yes
I took this pic today at the Welsh Mountain Zoo. A couple of Humboldt Penguins. I was really pleased with the moment - penguins don't seem to interact a lot. But it was shot through glass and is in need of serious recovery.

Please feel free to do with it what you like. I'll be interested to see what people can come up with. If you want to "cheat" I've already uploaded my effort to my flickr pages (see sig). Can anyone do any better?

Phew tough one, here's my amatuer attempt..

Ooh, I like a challenge and this certainly fits the bill. I haven't had a look at yours yet but here is my version. I increased shadow contrast and a bit of a play about with curves, Noise Ninja to get rid of the noise and a mild High pass Sharpen and finished with a bit of light Burning of the light coloured rock behind.

Hi I have sharpened and cropped your pic. What do you think

Interesting takes on this both of you. Thanks for taking the time.

Lurch - not amateur at all - your background colours are very different from mine - but you've done what was required - ie to bring out the penguins as a better focal point

Hacker - you're not a million miles away from mine - yours is sharper. I did an extra saturation increase on the red channel only to bring out the beak.

Anyone else want to play?

Here's my attempt! It's a bit noisy, but I'm not good with noise, if anyone want to have a bash of the noise on this one feel free!

It doesn't look too noisy to me - good effort - I like it

Howzat ?

I've just shown these to Ms MV - she likes yours best. She says the sharpness and crop gives it a real action feel.

Thanks all for having a go.

Had a quick play:

Caught and bowled, sir. I think its better than mine. Care to share your smoke and mirrors?

Blimey, can't remember ! Lots of levels and curves adjustment layers, painting on the masks to selectively bring up the contrast in different parts of the image.

Tweaking the colours using selective colour, and bit of selective sharpening on the heads and beaks to pop them out.

Yes, I thought so. Works too.

Good effort too, Banath - but looks like too much noise reduction to me and its ended up soft. But I think you've got the colours and contrast spot on - so the penguins take centre stage. Nice one.

Cheers matey, I did have full suppression on the noise filter then I forgot to sharpen it! attempt No.2

Yeah - works better, I think. The only issue remaining is to bring out the red of the beak on the bird on the LHS.

Not sure if I've got a bit giddy with this one but here goes:

I like all the versions of this but that last one from Werecow takes the prize. Any chance of sharing the work flow?

Dai

Some great conversions! I've just realised how green my one looks. [/must take more time] :D

Agreed! all of these look pretty amazing when you consider the clouded look of the original ... but it would really be great if peeps actually shared how they got the results they did!

I was bored at work so here's my effort ;)

A tad noisy but could be cleaned up on the original OK.

just had 5 mins on this..

Nice one - thanks

I cannot begin to imagine why, but I'd never even really considered a crop. But it works really well and helps to draw attention to what we're looking at.

I'm off for another go.

First i had a go at sorting the white balance with paintshop's colour balance tool. I picked a reference colour that looked nearish to a neutral grey and then manually adjusted to my taste (still don't think it looks quite right though).

Next i played with the curves to get some contrast back. I actually did 2 curve adjustments one after another because of the extreme fogginess of the original.

Next i duplicated the layer and sharpened the background layer (think it was 0.6 radius, 200 strength, 0 clipping).

I then erased just the penguin's heads on the top layer so the sharpening only comes through on them.

Lastly i ran noiseware on default on the top layer to get rid of noise in the surroundings.

Thats about it i think!

Thought I would have a little play. I have done the following:-
adjusted contrast
adjusted shadows and highlights
used selective colour to darken the black
used the burn tool
increased saturation
reduced noise
used the blur tool
used unsharp mask
adjusted exposure
curves
plus a little secret ingredient of a plugin faded out- can you guess which?

Had a little play, what do you think?

Pretty cool - it needs more red on the beak

Its been an interesting exercise this. Thanks all for participating. It shows there's no right or wrong - just different.
