Im looking to change broadband from sky to bt as im only getting a very slow speed (See below)

Sky 4mps
or
BT Infinity 37mps

Is anyone else with them and can they tell me what its like (Besides fast)

when i try to add it to the account it wont let me so guessing they dont have it our area yet but bt do

I think it's only P2P which is shaped. (currently considering whether to go BT @ £26/m for 60Mbit/20Mbit or Clara.net at £50/m for 40/10 unlimited/uncapped/unshaped... and leaning heavily towards BT)
 
I switched from Sky to BT Infinity three months ago. My Sky speed was half of what you are getting and their is no cable in my area. I did ask Sky if they had any plans for fibre but they said no.

I haven't checked recently but I was getting 18-20gb download speeds with BT. The difference is most noticeable (obviously) when downloading large files or streaming high quality video.

I did query with the sales guy if there would be any problem accessing torrent sites (I like my US TV shows) and he said no. He was being disingenuous at best as I later discovered that BT throttle all torrent sites during peak periods. I understand why they do this but I would like to have been told upfront.

I went for the 40GB package but I've just upgraded to the unlimited pack as I have gone over the allowance two months running. To be fair to BT they didn't charge me but that won't last so I have bitten the bullet. I'll probably go back to Sky if they are offering fibre when the BT contract runs out as I still have Sky TV and suspect that they will offer a competitive package.
 
I'm with BT, not that there's a lot of choice in my neck of the woods. The quoted speed for my line was 40Mb/s down, where as in reality I get 26Mb/s down and around 6Mb/s up. More than happy with that as they best I got before was around 8Mb/s down with Plusnet, O2, Wanadoo etc. The big plus for me has been reliablity - I don't know if it's the BT Homehub or the separate 'modem' you get, but the line has been rock solid for months - *every* other router / provider required rebooting at least once a week (if not more often with O2).

Overall - very pleased with BT Infinity personally. However, I have to say a work colleague has had pretty much the opposite experience in terms of throughput.
 
just been told by sky that i can get fibre optic bb so might just go with that saves the changing

seems thats what theyre saying on their site.

there does seem to be a lot of gamers complaining their traffic is being mistaken for P2P traffic if youre into that kinda thing.

few complaints of over subscription and slowdowns too.

but hey should be better than virgin and their rediculous amount of routing issues :lol:

Can I ask what kind of throttled download speeds you’re getting during peak times? I have BT Infinity and it is a ridiculously slow 2-3/kbps most of the time. It can take 3 or 4 days to download a film.
 
ive gone with Sky estimated speed of 40mps but anything has to be better than 4mps its being installed on the 15th

has anyone got a picture of thier setup or can explain to me how it connects as im slightly confused i dont know anyone local that has this setup so cant go and look
 
I've got Infinity - can't speak highly enough of it. Lowest speed I've seen is 25Mbps, average is 38. Not had any throttling issues to speak of, and I would consider myself a heavy user.

It varies (probably due to the torrent availability), although it would never be as low as those speeds. Can't see why it would take days to download a movie if you are leaving it on overnight, as there is no throttling then. Seems to be 4pm-Midnight weekdays and 9am-Midnight at weekends.

Had infinity installed approx 3 weeks ago - usually seeing 37Mb/8Mb, but have seen 25Mb/8Mb once or twice.

Compared to 3Mb/486k on adsl i'm so chuffed :thumbs::thumbs:
 
I went with clarasoho.co.uk on their 80/20 package. I know it's twice the price of BT, is truly unshaped (like Be I'm leaving) and is less likely to end up congested. I am wedded to my internet connection (work from home) so I'd rather pay for good support (the one phonecall I made on Saturday left me with a warm fuzzy glow that the support people know what they are doing).

We'll see when it gets installed next week :D
 
Just waiting for my exchange to be upgraded (1-2 weeks) to infinity 2 80Mb /20MB on BT Busineess :D - , normal infinty been grate and excellent support when the router died - eng arrived in the afternoon with a new one !
 
Thanks dogfish, just checked on By and in the next few days I should be getting 55Mbps down and 18Mbps up :)
 
Sky fiber coming for me on 18th. Currently 1.5mb top speed, will get 40mb now and a max of 60mb in future, I'm sure 40 will be enough for me.
 
I said the magic words 'BT Infinity' to Virgin media retentions yesterday and my internet speed went up and my monthly bill went down by £23 :)

What's the download limit for BT? I watch iplayer in HD a fair bit and wouldn't want to run out of space just from watching telly.

Currently on Be lite (I think, cheapeast package) and it's rock solid watching iplayer HD...though was ropey a couple of months ago.

Cheap option, £18 per month, 40gb limit. £26 option is unlimited.
 
my bt is pooh
so is their customer service, fine if you have a spare 3 hours to waste speaking to someone you can hardly understand that keeps repeating a script
after 18 months it's still pooh if anything it is worse, off more often than it's on and often slower than a dial up
 
Just ordered an upgraded box from Virgin media, they state 60Mb with no mention of upload speeds, hopefully its better that my 1Mb upload limit at the moment. I usually get about 10Mb downstream at the moment from a single source, or 18-20 from multiple threads.

Its the upload speeds that bug me, I am quite happy with 20mbps download just wish my photos went as fast the other way :-(

just did a quick test of my BT Infinity on my Macbook

i got 36.97 down & 8.36 upload with an 11ms ping

its been very reliable so far for me. previously i was on the regular BT connection & got an average of around 6.5 MB
been with BT around 7 years & never really ever had any downtime.
it just works :thumbs:

just tried it again now & got 37.24 down & 8.37 up so it seems fairly consistent :)

That ping figure alone suggests something is wrong, even dialup should have pings around 100-120ms to somewhere nearby.

I agree. Are you using WIFI? If so, try connecting to our router via Ethernet cable and run the test again.

If you have another machine, try from that too. If still no joy, contact your BT.
 
well my fibre optic is being installed tomorrow looking forward to the speeds lets hope its not rubbish

Because TV will be delivered via it... 3 or 4 HD channels - one to each "STB" in the house and you're into the 30's-40's just there... It'll be cheaper than renting a satellite transponder that's for sure. It'll just take some years to come - 2020 was the last date I saw - so maybe 2 years was optimistic.

The speed isn't there for you to browse, but for people to sell you stuff.

Allegedly, I have my 80/20 (NOT BT) FTTC enabled tomorrow :D

ive gone with sky not bt as found out sky were now offering fibre seemed a better option than changing to bt
 
I'm now into my fourth month with BT Infinity. Hasn't all been rosy - as I said previously I think in this thread, they were disingenuous at best with me when I enquired about accessing torrent sites, failing to point out that these are throttled at peak times.

Also had an issue with exceeding the 40GB limit - a family member had installed a torrent client on another PC, had failed to place a limit on upload speeds, downloaded the latest episode of a US series and left the PC running for 2-3 days. :bonk: The thing is, BT will email you to warn you that you are exceeding your limit - but they sent the warning emails to the standard btinternet email I had been issued with but which wasn't my registered notification address. A complaint got the excess charge of £35 reduced by £15, but they wouldn't shift further. I have since upgraded to the unlimited package...

I also found that I was getting very sluggish speeds on iPhones and the iPad - fixed after a Google suggested that a channel change was required, and sure enough that sorted it!

On a postive note, the day it was installed, the engineer was getting 40MBS at the socket, but this was dropping off to low to mid-twenties at the end of my wired connection, and slightly lower again on wireless. I'm now getting close to 50MBs on the wired connection (see below)!

I know I'm unusual in my usage habits (I moved more than 10G yesterday on a 4Mbit link) but I really don't see the point of capped downloads on a link of 40Mbit/s. Theoretically, a 40Mbit/s link allows you to download nearly 13000G a month (and that's without the upload if that's added in) and 40G is 0.3% (i.e. three thousandths) of your capacity...

IMHO there's very little choice at the moment for £50 or less: BT option 2 or BT business unlimited, Clara.net business, Sky (but that's limited to 2Mbit up as far as I can tell plus you have to have their phone package), Virgin (but I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole after the last time we were with them, plus we don't have cable) or web tapestry (who???).

So for me it was down to BT being the lesser evil of the "big 3" (but I wanted a static IP and you can only get that on business) or Clara.net. Let's see what today brings.....

You need to encrypt your connection.

I switched from sky to BT (after 7 years) because my 1.2mb sky connection started to hack me off.
I even paid for both sky and BT at the same time to make sure I could get infinity sooner and still 'work my notice' with sky.

Infinity is the best upgrade we did... Was stunned to get a 1.5gb film down in 10 mins.
Better than that was that I found a link to 'upgrade to Infinity 2 for free'.
So did that last week and our speed doubled again.
So in Jan we had 1.2mb with sky, now we have 79mb with BT, I got a 2gb film in 4 mins (peak time).
Nothing but praise for infini at the moment :thumbs:
