Utter carnage on the roads last night... I made the 1 1/2 hour walk home in the snow rather than 6 - 7 hours sat in the car!

Hope everyone else in the area got home safely.

Hi,
Finished work at 3.
Abandoned van in Emmer Green at 4-30.
Walked to Tilehurst.
Got home at 6-30, soaked to the bone!

I quite enjoyed the walk as it happens, people were even talking to and helping each other....that's not supposed to happen where we live!

But you're right, it was carnage.

Mike.

My son works near Tadley and took over five hours to drive home. It was only five hours as I, making good use of the intarwebby, convinced him to avoid Junc 12 where he normally joins the M4 and to head west through Newbury.

His workplace closed down today. Which was handy as he didn't intend driving in today and stayed in bed until midday :D

left alton at 2:30, arrived in Southampton about 7:50.
A colleague left about the same time as me and made it home to Reading at 2:45am..

I left Tilehurst at 16:00, got to Braintree (Essex) at 21:30 - not too bad considering.

The M4 was utter carnage - we were moving at about 10mph, I was leaving a good 50-75yds to the car in front, and the snow was settling on the road.

Still, people think that they can swerve from one lane to another in very obvious snow and ice, like they're invincible or something

... and now we have thunder and lightening. Excellent.

I've heard some nightmare stories from my workmates - I'm definately glad we decided to abandon the car and make the walk - didn't much enjoy the walk back yesterday morning though! Council reckon they "did everything they could" but I can honestly say the first gritter I have seen was last night. Roads a lot better today to be fair but monday night was just chaos.

Oh it was mental last night, I was walking to a mates house (usually takes 30-45 mins) took me 1 hr 15. The police had to be called to warn people about the conditions of the road. its just bloody awefull where I live.

Was indeed choas in B'stoke.

This was taken bout halfway through the snow fall. Cars trying to get out of one of the commercial areas.

On the walk home. Looking up the A33, cars heading towards Reading. Well when i say 'heading' in mean 'pointing' there was no movement at all!!

In the morning, some of the side roads on the walk in to work.

Sorry for the thumbnails but i could not be bothered to alter the size of the images to fit forum rules. Just uploaded these straight off the phone.

I'm so glad I moved away from that part of the world, the chaos would have driven my mad.
My sister still lives in Basingstoke and she told me how bad it was there.

How bad was the snow in Tilehurst?
I remember when I lived in Reading, there was a heavy snow fall and cars were struggling to get up Norcot Road.

THis is more or less what we had in parts of Kent last Thursday when it took us 4 hours to get home from Bluewater which is normally a 1/2 hour drive.
At one point we thought we were destined to spend the night parked on the M2 through the night,

Slightly off topic but if any of you are free on either 23 or 24 Jan, there is a meet being organised in your kneck of the woods.

It's be nice to catch up with some people from Reading / Basingstoke.
Apart from the occasional drive to my sisters place, I've not been there for years.

Roads are ok now... it's just walking that is the problem. Ended up on my behind yesterday and I've got a lovely big bruise on my arm today :bang:

Hashcake - snow was bad all over Reading. They closed a lot of the roads in Tilehurst including Norcot Road. This gives you the idea:

and some abandoned cars and lorries in Basingstoke...

I saw the news reports about Basingstoke on TV.
I spoke to an old friend earlier in Reading and he said he is glad that he is now off work until the new year, otherwise there was no chance of him getting to work in Wokingham.
He also said the pavements are trecherous due to the ice.
That place in Tilehurst in the video, I lived near there for a few years but I never saw snow like that in the 28 years I lived in Reading!
