Yes
I'm picking mine up on Saturday from the Toyota dealer I work at. Whats your thoughts? The £20 pa road tax really appeals.

If I did I would not admit to it.

Is it for the hippy green factor you are getting one?

When you take into account the pollution created in the manufacture of a pious I reckon my Land Rover is more environmentally friendly, still going strong after 26 years and almost completely recyclable.

Exactly my point...........

A BMW M5 is more economical than a Prius.... They proved it on Top Gear ;)

Thought it was a M3?

I'd rather walk than own a Prius.

I'd be buying a new small diesel if I wanted cheap tax, like mentioned above! :)

Life shouldn't be a journey to Heavens gates with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather, to skid in broadside, cigar in one hand and Jack Daniels in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly shouting, 'Wow! What a ride!

Nope, does not compute :p

Actually, I think you're right....... On all three points

The ones I keep coming across, it'd be quicker to walk.

Then fit a bigger intercooler, get it remapped and still pay £0 tax.
I wonder if we'll get a Hybrid Mondeo from next year in Europe which will look similar to the American 2013 Ford Fusion. 240PS Ecoboost engine driving the front wheels and electric motors driving the rear wheels. At least it looks like a car.

I've been in a few Prius's... they're OK but I wouldn't want to own one.
They're not actually that good on mpg and I'd balk at the replacement cost for the batteries after (perhaps) 5 or 6 years.

Before I read your post, I thought that was a picture of a cheap Chinese rip-off of an Aston Martin :gag:

 Give me an Aston!! Please! :D

Hmm, Prius....hope you enjoy it Dave but I am afraid my feelings are pretty much the same as most others in this thread. There are other options that are equally cheap on road tax, more environmentally sound across its entire life from build to scrap and more economical to run. I am also sure there are some pretty good drivers that own a Pious, but in my experience of falling over them in London, they seem to be universally badly driven too. :(

i bought one for a rep i employed and when he was relieved of his services i picked the prius up from his house - he left the key on the wheel arch. I sat on the drive for 20 minutes trying to figure out how to start the thing!

i had it for a week or so - thinking i'd save my usual £100 a week on juice.. it averaged 42mpg which was a good split between motorway and short stop start trips.. so no different than my 2L Audi diesel really.

Sorry, can't resist it, but I did these cartoons when there was that braking issue a couple of years ago ;) :D :naughty: . . .

Kidding and criticisms aside, enjoy your new purchase anyway!

Then you'd love a MINI Diesel, £0 road tax and more economical than a Prius :naughty:

It's £0 road tax on my 2 litre Giulietta as well. 50mpg average on short runs 60mpg+ on motorways and 21,000 miles between services.

There are a lot of high mileage Priuses (or "Prii" to be pedantic) starting to appear at auction and it amazes me that they seem to sell, I mean who in their right mind wants a 5 year-old 100k+ mile car with a battery pack which is out of guarantee and costs as much, if not more, than the value of the car?

Dave

I bought a Prius 20 months ago and have done nearly 40k in it. Best car purchase I ever made and then some. We've driven to Vienna in it and Mallorca. Economy is very good - I regularly get low to mid 70s in the Summer and I'm not a gentle driver by any stretch of the imagination. To get low to mid 40s mpg requires a very heavy right foot and very cold weather. I've cruised all day on Euro autobahns doing 85++ when I could and returned 53mpg.

I'm a little concerned to hear you say the road tax is £20. I haven't paid any as yet so that must be a change.

But it is far more then just economy. I terminated a lease on a Lexus when I bought the Prius and I have to say this car is better in so many ways. And the satnav is far better than anything else I've experienced.

Ignore the dinosaurs and enjoy your new car :D

The braking 'issue' was later shown to be a problem with the highly flawed, American made, squidgy bit holding the steering wheel.

A friend of mine has a Prius. Bitterly disappointed with the MPG. Not even close to what they were claiming.

i prefer my remapped derv cheers, still gets ~55mpg on a run, and is a bit more fun when i want :D
Me too, 190bhp on tap which gets used regularly, lowest average mpg I've had is 48.5 over a tank and highest average over a tank 59mpg. Not bad for a large family saloon.:)
Plus the Pious is just plain fugly.:gag:

There was a cracking episode of South Park where everyone in LA got a Prius and a "Smug" cloud threatened to destroy the country

What's a derv? Obviously not a car person here!

The Prius is extremely environmentally unfriendly if you consider the total cost of production. The impact of mining the special metals for batteries is immense and so is the cost of disposal. Replacing batteries after 10 years will be expensive.

The kindest is actually most likely to be to keep an older car running and running well.

I actually like the look of the new Mondeo and yes, I noticed the Aston Martin styling. The current one has tail lamps similar to a Maserati, but the other way up.

DERV was a popular acronym for Diesel Engined Road Vehicle, although its lost its usage over the past 15 years.

I'm obviously showing my age not having heard of that :P

When I saw Giulietta I got excited, then realised that if it were 2l and 21k service intervals it was hardly likely to be a Sprint Veloce ...

Oh! WOW! Isn't that interesting......

Most industrial nickel is recovered from recycling and not mined. And the cost of 'disposal' in Japan, where the Prius is the best selling car, is, er, zero. On account that the old batteries (usually from written off cars rather than from having an age-relaated under-performing battery) are recycled by Sumitomo Metals.

Talking of recycling. How do we recycle those thousands of tons of derv particulates in the air. Ah, that'll be with our children's lungs.

This is the year of the Model S launch. Bring it on.

You would be surprised. This is my fourth Alfa Romeo Veloce, the last two were the 2.4 litre 5 cylinder diesels so it had a lot to live up to. This time i decided it was time to go green and opted for the less powerful 140HP. I haven't been disappointed, the little DNA switch is the secret to it all because it remaps the brain. Keep it in the 'N' (Normal) position and drive sedately and the fuel consumption is at it's best, but when you switch it to 'D' (Dynamic) it takes off like a rocket. It changes the power, steering, brakes and suspension, but of course the fuel consumption suffers. Even if you don't want to buy one it is worth taking it out for a test drive just for fun. I've not tried the 'A' (All weather) setting properly yet, I'm hoping that it will work as well as the others.

I was thinking of the Guilietta made in the 1950s and 60s

Me 5....

Only 105hp and 180 torques, but for a 1.3 punto diesel that weights about 7 oz (until I get in) it's quite nippy.

If you watch a few US progs, as I do, you'll soon see how the Prius has wormed its way in to lots of them as product placement and toyota sponsorship. Not just being used, but getting a name mention by actors, and in one show in particular [Warehouse 13], constant fawning over how good it was. :puke:

Me 4

220bhp 440lb torque and 48mpg in dad mode

Not me though :naughty:

125bhp (from 1040cc naturally aspirated), no idea what torque, 9500rpm rev limit, 6mpg. 0-60 in 5 seconds

It's not my road car, that's a 250bhp, 3.2l flat six with a 7250 rev limit and manages about 25mpg.

I like engines that can be wound up ...

The Mondeo came first. Maserati copied them and turned them upside down.

The problem is the Prius and it associated manufacture, import by cargo vessels and driving mostly with it's 1.5 litre petrol engine (combined with it's heavy weight), means it pollutes the atmosphere in much the same way as your average car anyway, negating it's green values and putting as much crud in your childrens lungs as any vehicle.

On one hand I applaud you for paying for an immature developing technology. Somebody has to pay for it... At least it is quite decent when you are stuck in traffic and do low speeds. That car doesn't make much sense if driving on M'way or faster than 35mph - it is just a hungry petrol from there.

I must say I much prefer diesels to Prius and Skoda Octavia 1.6TDI or Volvo S40 1.6D fit OP's £0 tax band. The band itself is largely meaningless compared with the running costs, including fuel and servicing.

The government should really start charging £2k + for the ones like M5, AMG and other petrol nonsense polluting waste. I'd rather drive Prius than one of those. Diesel (nor petrol) will never win over simply because oil consist of heavy fractions (diesel and tarmac) and light fractions (petrol) and some natural gas that still sadly goes to waste.
