Anyone done the Practical Photography Free DSLR Course?

Thanks. My e-mail host has a fantastic spam filter, but sometimes it's a bit over zealous with new senders. Now no need to go trawling through thousands of spam e-mails just in case.

I'm not going to sign up but for everyone who has - I don't think it is a waste of time at all. Having a structured course set out for you means you are more likely to try different things and be a bit more methodical about your learning

Having threads on here would definately help people keep going with the course as well - it's nice to be able to talk about it and compare shots. I know I wouldn't have finished my 2009 52 without the feedback I received here.

I have subscribed to the magazine for a couple of years now and never quite found the time to enter; although it is my New Year's resolution to enter some competitions and stuff this year. The standard of materials is very good so, if anything, it might consolidate and develop understanding of the basics.

Do you have to buy the magazine for the assignments on this free course, or is it online?

I have done the 2 course they have run (both very similar in my opinion!). I def got more the first time around. There were supposed to be loads of giveaways but i think they just sent out a load of jessops cleaning cloths barely big enough to wipe a viewfinder let alone a lens...

the second time i did it was ok. Personally spend £10 in charity shops on photography books you will get loads of info - or if you have not done it, go back to your manual and work through each page ticking off as you gothen just practice and share your photos here - you will probably get more feedback!

The way I read it was that in each issue of the magazine there will be a section based on that modules topic but there will also be online videos and resources that you can use. I think you can do the course without the magazines as you'd just use the online stuff.

I asked whether we should get some kind of email confirmation that we have enrolled and Photo Answers have said that once you register you should've been forwarded to a page saying that your registration was complete and that you don't get any kind of email confirmation.

So I assume that the first email we get will be at the start of the course. Am really looking forward to it :)

Don't forget that they are running a special offer six month subscription for £10 to cover the six isues carrying the course.

 thought i might have a go at this as well should keep me busy along with my 52 week challenge ,i also got mag subscription online with no problems

I couldnt get the 6 issues for a tenner to work online so rang up and quoted the reference number, lady had the deal straight away.

What was the problem?

Signed up for this and did the £10 subs no problems with doing it all online. Just hope I can follow it all, I think it might go way over the top of my head.

I signed up for the course last year.

Tried to sign up again this year and it wouldn't let me! Said email was already registered! Anyone had this problem?

Signed up too (I think!) but no email received as yet so fingers crossed :) Was there any news back from the mods re a designated thread? I don't think it will be a problem. Looking forward to it as it will make me be a bit more disciplined and hopefully teach me loads

Signed up too and hope it helps me to get out more. I'll try anything once

Can you not just use another email address?

I PM'd both Hacker and Marcell about the designated thread but neither of them have responded :(

Maybe we should just set up a thread anyway - just which section should it go in

Competitions, Challenges and Inspiration looks to be the right place. Maybe a sub-forum with a separate thread for each month's assignment.

What do you think?

Funny enough got an email from them today inviting me to sign up for the 2010 course. The link they sent me in the email allowed me to sign up for the course ok!!

If you want a seperate section you might be better using the contact us bit at the bottom of page rather than sending pms to Marcel and Hacker. They seem to prefer members using the contact us bit.

That was lucky then King of Groove - glad you've managed to sign up.

Gazza - I was thinking maybe challenges would be a good place. I thought maybe we could have a thread for pictures and then a seperate one for discussion for each topic, similar to how the Photographer of the Year section is laid out.

I have sent the message to the contact us bit at the bottom of the forum and hopefully should get a response form that. Will keep you updated as to what they say.

I still haven't had any response from anyone about setting up a thread / area to share pictures.

Does anyone else have any ideas on where it should be set up?

Has anyone received their copy of the magazine yet? I'm pretty sure it's due out tomorrow :)

Got my copy of Aprils issue today, not read yet, will see how busy work gets this afternoon!

I got an e-mail from them today 'Get Prepared for DSLR Skills 2010...', no magazine yet though.

A separate thread for this would be great though. :)

*cough* yeah sorry about that...

why not have a dedicated thread each month with the images in either general sharing or themes/challenges, with a seperate thread for the conversation about it? that sound ok?

Tut tut Matty - I'll let you off this time ;)

Sounds great to me - is that something that a mod would need to set up or am I ok doing it myself? Never quite sure how these things work on here :)

Got my mag in the post and my introduction email. Looking forward to the homework exercises - already got a couple of ideas

Not a good start. magazine in the shops but no postal copy yet.

Got my email and magazine today. Just about to start reading the mag.

:'( not had my magazine yet. Got the email last night though so maybe the postie will deliver tomorrow. I have read the five project briefs via the email link. Is this our first "task" as in, pick one of the five projects, or am I being a bit thick

The project briefs are for your individual project which must be completed alongside the tasks set in each issue.

This months homework tasks are taking an image of an urban scene using a fixed item such as a statue, fence or wall and creating a blur effect of people walking past and then an urban scene with light trails. When you get the magazine it will make sense :)

I read it as being that the additional project (which you chose from the 5 briefs) is a seperate thing that you do throughout the 6 months to create a series of images depicting that theme.

how about setting up a flickr group also?

never set one up so dunno if its a faff.. :) have had my emails, got the mag and am ready to go..
