Yes
I am thinking about doing a TEFL course, but as I am in Spain, I won't be able to attend any classes and so distance / online learning is the option available to me.

In my quest for finding an online TEFL course, there are loads and so I wondered if anyone on here has completed an online course and could give me some pointers. A good provider for example would be a start!!

Hope someone can help. I'm not looking for employment with it, just some teaching ideas as I keep getting involved in teaching english to Spanish kids out here at their houses!!!

Sara,

No but I know someone in torrevieja who has done a TEFL course - not sure if she did it in Spain or online. I will ask here and check back.

sorry read that as a tefal course thought it was to do with electrical cooking items

I looked at doing the CELTA - there is a school in Valencia that does it. It was impossible for me with the girlies so young, as I'd have had to stay up there Mon to Fri

Cheers Lynton - That would be good

Absolutely not TEFAL!! I don't do any cooking in our house!

Cheers for that Sarah - I could do a course in Valencia but just wanted an online distance course. I'll let you know if I find anything decent.

I did the i-to-i one years ago but didn't do anything with it. I know a couple who have have been in Spain for years subsequent to doing the same course, but have been since advised that it might not be enough for a lot of places without experience. It helps if you also have a degree for a lot of countries.

Thanks - I was looking at the i-to-i site and thought that their course met my needs. I know it sounds silly, but at the moment I don't want to use this is a class environment. I'm getting a few spanish people who want me to help their kids with their english and I think this would benefit me in teaching them.

There's plenty of free guidance available if you dont really need a certificate just now. The most important thing is lesson plans and targeting your client/class and I can't remember the i-to-i course being too big on that.
Just noticed you are in Spain anyway, so I guess you have a grasp of their language, so you have a headstart there. The Guardian website used to have lots of advice on their site. I don't have the links my friends sent me in the past, but I'd suggest you save your pennies for now and use the web ;)

Sue is over here for the summer teaching English - to "foreigners" in the UK - will catch up with her and get back to you

You can't do the CELTA or similar on line as observed teaching practice is a very large part of the course - in fact you spend about as much time on that as on reading/writing. I think the course is 120 hours of class attendance (and the same or more in terms of work outside the class for assignments and lesson prep).

Online courses are mostly unlikely to be any use in terms of recognised qualifications, they're useful for tasters, resources etc but there is a lot of free material available online as well. And you could get a series of books and work through those - they tend to have lessons that cover reading, writing, speaking and listening, and workbooks with exercises to practice what has just been learnt. Some of those plus some online resources might be more useful (and cheaper) than an online course. Then if you want a recognised qualification in the future you can look at CELTA or similar.

All the resources I use are aimed at adults in the UK but there are plenty of children's resources available.

(I've done the CELTA and I teach Entry 1 and 2 ESOL.)

The main benefit of doing any TEFL course is the supervised classroom experience. An online course would be pretty pointless in my opinion (I've done CELTA, DELTA and an MA in EFL).

Perhaps what I am after is not really a TEFL course then. I am spending time with spanish kids, who's parents realise the dire english that is taught in schools out here. I just wanted ideas and inspiration to help them, instead of using their school books.

Any online resources then would be very much appreciated  Books as well - I just love books!!

Oooh I've got some sites book marked I think. Hang on and I'll find you some linkys

Since we are being pedantic (;)) you'd also need an 'upside down question mark' in front of the word and a 'normal one behind it!! But I understood totally what you meant and it made me smile

Which is why I mentioned interrogation marks. It was a light-hearted comment, not one designed to create a row.
