just now caught a piece of the claptrap on BBC news........ " And the pope left at a sedentary pace in the popemobile on his way to Glasgow............"

Hmm, hardly like he was going to go screaming off Lewis Hamilton style or handbrake it out onto the main road.............

Seems the news is being dumbed down more and more........

I thought the biggest irony was that they used the car park at Rangers' ground to house all the coaches carrying the faithful

The BBC quotes a Lancet article claiming 9.3bn GBP/year in tax revenue on tobacco. The cost to the NHS of smoking-related diseases put at 1.5bn GBP.
Fair figures, but I don't think that takes into account the cost of lost opportunity or "collateral damage". There's also the issue of lost arable land for tobacco production, etc. We all agree smoking and alcoholism is bad. Religion is a different kind of evil though, nevertheless I wouldn't want my money to be spent for it.

Why did it have to turn into a religion debate
Are you surprised?

Interesting, could you post a link please?

Certainly, although I haven't been able to find the actual Lancet document. I'm not suggesting for a moment that smoking is a good thing, it clearly isn't. But it's evidently not as expensive to the country as you'd think.

link1 there is a link to the BBC source document on here but not the original Lancet one.

Oh... and apologies to the OP, I'm not trying to change the subject merely answering a request from Gramps for a link.

I'd like to see the evidence for that ... ever visited a busy A&E over the weekend? (That's not even mentioning police resources).
Then there are the vascular diseases, the coronary diseases, the respiratory diseases ... the list goes on.

I used to work in A&E as a qualified nurse and over the weekend we had the same drunken faces and those with drug related problems. We had fights breaking out within the unit, which as gramps as said we needed the Police in attendance, but I thoroughly enjoyed my work.

Thanks for the links Bill, I will check for the original Lancet article ... I would point out though that it only deals with smoking and does point out the serious effects of smoking even passive smoking. It doesn't, however, address the costs from the effects of alcohol :)

Whist your looking :) Why not see how much road accidents, sports, drugs (illegal) drugs (legal), industrial injury and please don't forget how many people are seriously killed by the NHS itself

I'm certainly not suggesting that drinking or smoking is good for anyone! but life is for living and enjoying

Right I think it may be time to put this one to bed now, as it's turned into a religion debate...which won't end well. (Yes I will admit I'm a little guilty of helping it in that direction too)

PS. Thank you to the member who emailed me to ask permission to post that photo ;)
(I said it would be best not to.....)

Mind the doors, gentlemen!
