The BBC in its infinite wisdom has decided that private off air conversations can now lead to dismissal ....

I am finding it harder by the day to justify why I should not leave this country at the first available opportunity.
Would you, by any chance, happen to be a Daily Mail reader?
Joking aside, if the comment was about the stuffed toys, that would have been fine. If it had been about Robinsons Jam, that would be have been fine. If it had been about the character itself, that would have been fine.
The fact that it was a comment about comparing a black tennis player to a golliwog was the issue at stake. At best it's a stupid comment to make, at worst it's borderline racist. And regardless of where it was said or who heard it, it was said, it was heard and she really ought to know better, especially with what's been going on with Auntie in recent weeks.
Ultimately the one person who has the right to say whether it was an offensive comment would be the tennis player in question, but that's a situation that's hardly likely to crop up. So the Beeb have to react in a way that they deem appropriate, and inevitably that will cause controversy. Perhaps even more than the comment in the first place.
Let's face it, there is a massive PC culture in this country and people are quick to get offended on other peoples behalf. It's getting to the stage where it's becoming nothing short of ridiculous. But common sense works both ways.
Assuming you are white, do you honestly think that referring to a black person as a golliwog is acceptable? Would you walk up to someone in the street and say it to their face? And if they reacted in an aggressive manner would you think they were out of order?
