No
some **** stole my 1d mk2N and 70-200L from the media centre at brands hatch.
gutted as i cant afford to buy these things willy nilly, and i was actually going to get paid for the days racing.

i'm insured with photoguard. Has anyone claimed with them before? What do you think my chances are if i had the camera stolen from my desk in the media centre?

Pavilion insurance are going to love me, as i had my bike nicked a few months back and claiming for that with them too. What is it with people wanting my stuff? If they cant afford their own then get a loan like me! Now i have to pay back loans for things i dont even own anymore. /rant over

hey, that's what you pay insurance for, though if it weren't locked up in the room or the room wasn't locked then you may not have a case against them.

Garry,

That's terrible!! I feel so sorry for you, it's no wonder that you are gutted!!:shake:

I hope this can get sorted quickly, and in your favour.

Here's hoping!!

Can't help with the question, but I too am sorry to hear about it!
There are some total R'soles about! I hope you get sorted quickly

Sorry can't help with your question but would be interested in how you get treated - I'm with the same insurer.

However, as wez says I think that if the kit was unattended and not locked up there is a only a small chance you'll get a pay out as although the area is restricted access it is still a public area, sorry.

Don't suppose the media centre was covered by CCTV and the police have the scumbags picture? If there is any chance of posting it on here :bat:

Is there a forum here to post the SN's of the items that were stolen? Just thinking that if people on here know what the SNs are they can keep an eye out.

did you register the serial #s with Canon
your new "best mate" might want it cleaning one day!!!!

Sorry to hear this, hope they do pay out.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that - not so good!

Had you left it there and gone walkies or just turned your back on it for a second?

Ouch!
Here's hoping it works out for you

That sucks Garry :(

Hope you get paid back so you can replace your kit.
Keep us updated.

i had my bike stolen a few months ago and it was insured with the same company as my camera.
i just got a letter from them saying they will replace my bike up to a value of £250. Then it goes on to say i have to pay an excess of £100 because my bike was locked in the secure car park of our flats and not in my flat. (i had been riding it in the recent floods, so i locked it in the car park instead of my flat as it was covered in mud. never locked it there before)

so, together with the £35 quid lock they made me buy (which proved to be crap), the £20 the insurance cost, £100 excess, £35 to buy a new lock for the new bike, it means i'm only basically saving myself £70. Hardly worth the bother, and i had to be without a bike for 2 months whilst they sorted it out (they wont let you buy a replacement).

So, when i get the new bike, i'm going to make my own Aluminium lock and just not bother getting it insured. (aluminium locks are lighters and you cant saw through them because it sticks to the teeth in the blade and renders it useless)

Hope you get a good pay out, let me know how photoguard are as i am with them as well.

Why was it left unattended?

i went home

normally its OK to leave stuff in the media centre because its locked over night and photographers dont nick each others stuff. from what i've heard since, though, they let a shed load of non media in there after the racing had finished. I guess one of them decided that someone they know nothing about can afford to donate them a free camera and lens. they obvioulsy didnt realise that a photographer might actually need his camera on the sunday to take photos of the racing.

If your going to do that I wouldnt bother with the lock, You can saw through Ali just as easy as most things.

Sorry to hear about your theft. When I originally read the thread I didn't realise it was left overnight and this might affect your claim although I am no expert. I must admit it is not something I would do particularly with an expensive bit of kit.

Good luck with the claim, I'll be interested to see how you get on as I am also insured with Photoguard.

Well I'm sorry to hear that Garry

You snoozed, you loozed - an expensive lesson to learn :( Personally I don't let any kit out of my sight for a second when I'm out and about, no matter how secure somewhere is. If it's not in my house it stays with me.

I had a claim from photoguard, but it was for a damaged camera (dropped in river), they paid out without any quibble (for the repair), and no excess.

What a sickening feeling discovering your kit has gone must be.

I dont have insurance myself but think its time I sorted some.

I sincerely hope PG pay up, Les's last post sounds promising.
Good luck Garry.

having worked as a fabricator in the motorsport industry and having made a crook lock for my old car out of 1" thick Al plate and tried sawing through it i can safely say that you are wrong on that one.
but this is getting a bit OT

Here is the policy wording from Photoguard, it seems if the kit was locked away, and the room was forcibly entered, then there is a chance of a claim?

You snoozed, you loozed

theres always someone who wants to tell you what you should have done.

believe it or not i do realise it was a dumb mistake, and losing all that money and putting an end to the career i've been working on for 3 years already helped underline that lesson. 'you snoozed, you loozed' doesnt make me feel any better or help in any way.

I read through the documents last night. Its not looking hopeful. But my experience in this situations is you just try anyway and hope for the best.

my fave one is the bit that says you arent covered for unexplained theft. like i've got to track down the thief and ask him why he nicked it before i can claim :)

My reading of that small print above would suggest you are only covered if the room was locked with all security devices active and entry was made to the room by force :( If people were let into the room then I guess it isnt looking good.

Is there anything written anywhere about being able to leave you kit in the media centre, as I am sure Brands Hatch will have their own insurance and if they offer secure storage of kit then you may be able to claim from them instead :|

thats a good point, i should check with them and see what their own insurance covers.
thanks

Aye, that does seem a stupid one. No theft is unexplained, some low life wanted what you had, didn't want to pay for it so took yours :bang:

True, sorry for that.

By the way, it's more than likely going to be a cleaner.

Would you have left a grand in cash on the same desk and expected it to be there the next day?

I am currently making a claim, though for accidental damage, sent the paperwork off on the 20th and currently waiting to hear back from them.

I miss my ickle Sigma!

Michael.

Hi i hope you get it all sorted and im intrested cos i use photoguard. Have you reported it to the police as i know some insurers want the crime number.

Photoguard now want me to send them the lens, apparently they can judge what needs doing better than Sigma.

It is going to cost £10 to get it back from Sigma, then another £5 or so to send it to Photoguard. Assuming they then send it back to me with a cheque for the repair then sending it back to Sigma again would mean I will have ended up having spent an extra third of the repair cost (£75) on postage, and been without the lens for another month as a consequence. So I am not even sure if it is worth it now.

I would have been better off just throwing it off of Chelsea Bridge and claiming it was lost!

Michael.

Just noticed this mate, sorry to hear about the bad luck :( Any joy with the claim?
