Hi,

had an accident, last weekend, so sent an email of to Photoguard with a few questions, prior to filling out the claim form.
Sent the email to - guardclaims@thistleinsurance.co.uk, on Monday, but have not received a reply.

Do they normally take this long to reply?

For those interested, I was asking about the repair estimate and 2nd hand lens.
Do they have a preferred company, for repairs, e.g. fixation and do I send the camera and lens off, pay for repair, then claim that back?

Also, have receipt for camera, but none for lens brought 2nd hand. How do I deal with this?

Thanks for any help.

John

Claimed quite a while ago. They took proof of ownership of the lens I broke from the embedded data in a photo I'd taken with the lens.

All dealings regarding the repair were done through Clifton cameras. I paid my excess to Clifton too. Didn't have to pay anything else upfront.

I think they have claim forms online, but I started my claim over the phone direct to Photoguard. I explained that I'd never made a claim before and asked them what I needed to do, step by step. Was dead easy and took a few weeks from start to finish.

Thanks for the reply Damien.

Didn't realise, I could contact them, via their website. Did that, earlier today and received an email very quickly.

Basically, I need to send the camera and lens for repair estimate, then send them this plus receipts, photos, etc. (Thinking of using Fixation, as there is no where local to me, in Northern Ireland that I'm aware off.)

Regarding the 2nd hand lens, they gave this reply below, so will need to see if I can find an old bank statement or something.

In regards to evidence of ownership, and your second hand purchase, we would ask that you can provide at least on of the following; eBay documents, PayPal documents, email correspondence with the seller, bank statement showing financial transfer, the box/user manual, receipts showing previous service/repair. You could also provide any jpeg images in support of the above showing the data that the lens was used.

Actually, re-reading that, does this mean I could send a jpeg of a photo taken with the lens, would this hold exif data showing my embedded copyright?

I've got insurance with Photoguard and I had to claim for a 7D that I dropped on a carpark while setting up. I got a quote and sent it in with the claim form (I'd missed sending in some info so my claim was delayed a bit) and within a week they'd agreed to pay the repair bill, which was £600. The camera was just about rebuilt at Lehmans and the insurance paid the repairers directly so I didn't have to pay anything out to get it under way. The 7D was a swap from another member of the forum so I had to prove ownership of the camera, I sent printed copies of the thread and a valuation of the body I swapped and that was all that was needed. I really can't fault Photoguard and have also got cover for the wifes equipment from there as well.

Camera and lens posted, to fixation, for repair estimate.

When making a claim does it put up your insurance for thefollowing year? I decided not to claim a while back and pay a little repair myself in case it put up my premiums for the following year.

Not sure. I'll have to renew, in June, so guess I'll know then.

Last year my repair on my 5d mk2 would have cost almost £1200 they offered me a new body if I paid the extra which I did and my premium only went up £3

Not sure about my premium going up as I'd added quite a bit of new gear by the renewal time. The only difference I noticed was I went from no excess to a £50 excess so I guess I can live with that.
