Anyone changed a blu-ray drive on a "fat" ps3?

If so, is it easy and where did you buy the replacement drive?

Any other info welcome.

Mines started to randomly refuse to recognise the inserted disc so I have to keep eject/load until it "sees" it. Also discs get stuck halfway out ejecting sometimes and also on loading.

Cheers all

dont you have to mod them to replace the drive? for some reason in the back of my head the drives are coded to the machine?

something like that anyway, there was something stopping one of the guys that used to work here replacing one. he just replaced the whole thing as it was easier.

Funnily enough I did mine last week.

Mine's the old 40gb model and the drive packed in. Luckily my brother had a knackered (ylod) 40gb ps3 with a working drive.

It's easy peasy and will take no longer than 10 mins. It would be easier for you to watch a YouTube video on how to strip it than me telling you.... But when you remove the drive itself (not all the models are exactly the same but similar) you will need to locate the drive controller board on your old drive (it is a fairly small circuit board attached to the br drive itself) remove it and attach it to your new drive (this board is paired to your ps3). Replace and bingo.

Might sound complicated, but it is really easy.

did look at a youtube video of it.

What is ylod?

Thinking I need a new controller too, so if a drive is £60 and a controller £30 odd Im nearly £90 already, maybe just buy a new superslim. 12Gb seems a bit small to me so maybe the 160Gb

Yeh I done mine about a year or so ago. Got a replacement drive off eBay.

Mine had YLOD. Think I caused it myself by moving the console upstairs with a disc in it. Possibly knocked the laser. Was pretty easy to swap - so long as you have the right drive. Be careful as IIRC there were a few different versions (depending on serial number).
