Good evening all,

Has anyone had and cancelled Sky TV? If so, what do you watch now? I'm fed up with paying for paying for loads of channels we never watch.

Many thanks
Simon

I’d cancel it if it wasn’t for the girlfriend. She watches a load of tv. Most days I’d turn in off. I do enjoy Picard on Amazon and I have subscribed to Disney+ for The Mandalorian.

Now TV has a lot of Sky stuff via broadband - £8.99 a month for the entertainment channels and many catchup/boxed set shows (sport or movies are extra). Pre-paid passes are sometimes bundled with their streaming sticks and boxes, and they have introductory offers:

If you cancel, they often make you a decent offer to stay for a few months - I'm paying £1.60 at the moment.

Cancelled it several years ago. Don't watch that much TV these days and what we do is on Freeview/Freesat.

Never!!! Addicted!

In normal times a big draw for me is the footie, cricket & darts. The odd movie is worth watching, big fan of Talking Pictures for old films (may be on freeview, not sure). Daughter watches a lot of Disney too.

Have you paused your sports subscription?

I had BT Sports but cancelled it tonight, because there is no sport on at the moment they cancelled it straight away instead of having to wait 30 days after your next payment date.
Thanks for the re plies.

I cancelled a few years ago now. I opened a prime account and I watch a combination of free view and prime.

About 15 years ago - 95% of the very little we were watching was on Freesat anyway. Could buy two Blu-rays per month and still be in front versus the Sky sub.

Have since added Eurosport player (principally for the cycling) on an annual pass at the usual Christmas rate - so £30/yr and an on/off Netflix sub (generally on in Winter, off in summer)

yep £80 a month saved ,got free view, and the lad has Netflix and Disney which come on all the house t.vs x3 plus you get catch up on bbc ,itv etc . Sky is a total rip off

We’ve got Now TV, had/has most of the Sky things we like, such as Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. My wife likes the art programs, Portrait Artist of the Year etc.

No I like my sport a little to much, (I've even gone back to BT for my broadband against my better judgement so I can get BT sport for £7 a month) but then I don't think £44 a month is to much for Sky Entertainment, Cinema, Sports and Box Sets all in HD not forgetting Sky Go Extra. (which is very useful when we are allowed to go on holidays again) I have however paused my Sky Sports package till this is over which reduces my monthly payments to £34 a month.

I Did years ago , I was paying £85 a month for all channels and they still wanted to put the price up , They are now HISTORY

I just called Virgin yesterday to reduce my package since it shot up to £115 per month. Dropped to minimum tv package with weekend calls and saved roughly £60 quid a month. My wife only watches soaps and Netflix and any sports i want to watch are postponed so no point paying.

Cancelled Sky TV 8 years ago.
After the 30 days they didnt switch it off, so called them up, and they said "oh that sometimes happens, I'll put a reminder on the system."
Direct debit cancelled as soon as I cancelled the service.
30 days later sky is still on so I emailed them.
30 days later, still on...the full package, so i sent a letter by RMSD.
8 years later i still have the full Sky package and haven't paid a penny since the original cancellation.

I was kicking myself for missing the Black Friday Eurosport offer in November, especially with the Olympics coming, and was thinking about signing up at full price before the Giro d'Italia. Now, not so much.

Not now CANCELLED

@sparker

I never had SkyTV.

I have Apple TV box. I did subscripted to Netflix, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime Video, mainly because of the kids and also because I wanted to watch the following...
  • Star Trek: Discovery on Netflix
  • For All Mankind on Apple TV+
  • Star Trek: Picard on Amazon
Now that the oldest have moved out to live independent, and the other one officially lives with the mum, so I cancelled Netflix and Apple TV+ to save money. Beside, I can always start the subscription again when there are new seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and For All Mankind.

I'm staying with Amazon for the moment, because Star Trek: Picard is still showing. Once it is over, I may consider cancelling Amazon until the next new season.

I don't really watch much television now because I'm mostly working on the computer. The reason I was watching television was because the kids were hogging the computer when they were living here, but since they're not living here, the computer is free for me, and I'm mostly doing projects and stuff.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I shall be checking all the options over the weekend.

Was you in contract when you cancelled?

I binned Sky about 9 years ago as they kept putting up their prices in the middle of a recession when most other people were holding their prices. Also, I realised most of the stuff I was watching was on Freeview anyway, and I disliked the seemingly increasing amount of American TV content many of the channels on Sky were screening. I told Sky this and said if I wanted to watch American TV then I'd move to America!

They tried all sorts of deals to get me back, too little too late! They should have looked after me better when I was a customer. I had to tell them not to contact me in the end! I've not missed Sky in the slightest and I'm happy enough with Freeview and the Internet.

I called them just before Christmas to cancel because our Sky HD box was going haywire for no apparent reason and for £80 p.m for just standard tv package + BB I thought I could do much beter. Only had the HD box 2yr! and it never moved from the corner it sat in [and yes, it was dusted every now and then] - it was locking up on menus, refusing to even open some channels and making a lot of noise then crashing randomly. The first guy I talked to was an absolute bell-end, and told me I would have to pay full price for a replacement plus a charge for an engineer to come sort it out. That's when I decided to tell them to shove it and cancel my sub, I'll be looking to other options - of which there are plenty. Got a call back a few hours later from a much nicer Sky rep who offered to send me a replacement box for free [explained there was no need for any engineer, it was all plug in and play], and also cut £25 off my monthly BB/TV package bill so long as I stayed .... aye, I'm still with them ... but I have a shiny new box and 25 quid better off p.m :D

We cancelled Sky a couple of years ago - paid £100 for a Now TV Annual Subscription (Entertainment & Movies) and that broadly covers what my wife watches; between that, Netflix and Amazon Prime.

I pay for Premier Sports for the Rugby and Footie but I generally watch what I'd see on Sky/BT Sport in the pub!

So We were getting north of £100 on Sky for Phone, Broadband and TV with Sky sports. Virgin had it for £70 so I call sky and cancel. They tried to take £10 off but wasnt interested.

next day get a call from sky - you want to leave can I ask why and can we do anything to keep you.
Me Yeah Virgin is cheaper and I will get fibre broad band
Sky Ok so what do you watch
Me Sky F1 and Sky One and Eurosport
Sky Ok well if we take off the spots pack we could do it for £65
Me erm well no because it want sky F1
Sky well ok then urm ah ok well we could do it for £65
Me is that fibre broadband?
Sky Yes oh um wait let me check its available in your area.
Sky so its not yet active in your postcode so we can take £5. That will be £62
Me er did you not say it was £65 and you would take £5 off thats £60
Sky well yes but if you dont have fibre then XXX costs more.
Me thanks ill just go with Virgin and get BT sports free so I can watch MOTOGP as well

18months later the deal with Virgin finished and it reverted to higher price. Call up and they offer to take £5 off. Tell them to cancel it and I set up Sky to send me a new box. 2 days later Virgin leaving team calls and offers me the £70 price for another year

Virgin seem to have a 2 day delay before the people that can give you the cut price deals call. Sky are a little quicker on that front.
We plan to bounce between the two with whoever offers the best price
