Anyone bought a number plate?

Err Nope - never was. Never will be:nono:

....So says you. I'll grant you not quite a god but certainly a true petrolhead and, as far as I'm concerned, a good guy.

I've never been a huge fan of private plates, but I've spotted one thats got my initials and that of my wife and doesnt scream out 'private plate w*n*er' so maybe I'll prise open the old wallet...

I agree, I hate seeing them where people mis-space, add screw caps etc so if you stand on one leg and squint you can just about make out what name they're trying to spell

Got my plate when I ordered a new car, it's my year of birth and my initials which is nigh on my name anyway  (the plate is R77 RSS)

When I put it on my old X-reg focus a lot of people didn't even realised it was a personal plate but that was fine with me :)

Bit of a hassle when changing cars if you're not part-exing through a dealer. You have to get the plate off of your old car onto "retention", sell your car, buy a new car, and get the plate back on.

Also, my son had his car (with personal plate) stolen a few years ago, never to be seen again (well actually it did turn up in Ireland three years later lol). The DVLA enforce a one year wait period before you can put your plate onto another car.

....Me too. Looks chavvy and cheap, even if the car is expensive. However, I have seen some which are legal spec but form just one word, so it's only the spacing which is illegal and depending on what word is it can look very cool or amusing.

A couple of VW enthusiast friends of mine with VWs they love have M11 VWX and R11 VWX (Mandy & Romany). I have just used a photo of their cars for a 2014 calendar I am designing.

The DVLA have wised up and all BMW plates are at a premium. Black Man's Wheels in Birmingham.

Porsches with 911 in their plate are uber cool

Wouldn't be on mine, as it's a 986

....986 would be cool in your case then.. You know what I meant though - They're mostly 911 derivatives.

I never really liked private plates but when the new (now old) plates came out, I thought I would get a private plate that looked normal.

PF05 TER spells my name but it was taken. Might have a look for it again as it may be a scrapper now

Phil.

best one around here for a while was AMP10N with a swiss marker (CH) just to the left of it...

FA57 CAR was on a veyron once... thing it's now on a range rover.. :'(

I will keep the thread updated... Got the confirmation email.. registration bought.. just waiting now...

Hi Tony

Will keep my eyes open and see if I can "paparazzi" you :)

If you need to get plates down, I think Car & Garage still do plates (bottom of Manchester Rd, Haslingden - near Tesco) great price and fantastic service...

It's just a matter of personal preference but I have always thought of private plates which reflect the car owner's name rather than the car as being a bit ostentatious. That's why I chose to pay homage to my red Mk5 GTI VolksWagen 'VW05 RED' rather than to me.

See I never understood that. Lots of Tvr owners have Tvr as the reg letters. BMW sold the x5 with x5 reg plates. I know what car it is.
My wife bought one, for £295 from DVLA, with her company name and initials. Only trouble was it cost me a new mx5 to put it on.

....Among the car communities I know (TVR, BMW, VW) it's more of an enthusiast's thing to do. It tells other, similar minded, enthusiast drivers on the road that you particularly love your car. I have actually met people who I'm now regular friends with who my car 'introduced' me to out in public - My VW05 RED plate got me recognised. X5 plates on BMWs are particularly common. M3 or CSL plates are the cooler ones to have.

My sister's father in law had an X30 plate on 3L X-type jag but he got rid of that for a Range Rover sport and the X30 has become like a "family" plate as his wife and their 2 sons have X30 and their initials on their plates now (Well where my sister's concerned it's a combo of both their initials).

I always wanted a private plate on my car got to my big five o and took the plunge bought a porsche boxster (2000 3.2s) as a weekend toy then decided a plate was needed. Went the Irish route and bought TEZ8037 (Terry) from Speedy Reg which went through without a hitch You either love them or hate private plates, me I think they great when done correctly.

Well thats not bad... Bought late thursday and the certificate of entitlement arrived in the post this morning :)

No instructions.. back to website to see what I do next..

Are the instructions not on the rear of the form, I don't have one to hand

yeagh posted on here before looking proper... seems simple enough... fill in and send with mot and photocopy of tax disk and ownership docs... they will send out new tasc disk and new mot and authorisatiion ... takes two weeks...with new owner docs a couple of weeks later.. but then again this form was supposed to be two weeks .. could be done and dusted before crimbo :)

T25 ASP ...Tea two sugars... as soon as possible ?

sorry... silly mood :)

form and documents sent same day (monday 2nd) if i get a reply next week I will be happy... next step (when my new documents arrive) is to inform insurance to change there details and then buy and stick plates on... I think ?

Never got that either (well, I don't understand why you'd want personalised plates at all). The name of the car is already on the back of it. I usually just assume the owner has too many cars, so made the regos the same as the cars to make them easy to remember. ;)

There are a couple of beemers on our street, one with the rego, JBOND and the other TOPBMW. I can only assume both owners are complete tools.

Because they drive BMWs?

I should hasten to add that not all BMW drivers are todgerheads but there do seem to be a disproportionate %age of them who are!

I don't care... I love my BMW ..it's all sleek and shiney and will look luverly wiht the new number plate :)

This is my cars number plate

I thought it was the earlier Freeloaders that were dogs? ;)

Most call me Bazza, hence the B, then when I purchased the plate we had 3 dogs of our own, so that is that part of the plate. Also owning a boarding kennels for the DOG part of the plate.

So that is why I got the plate B3 DOG.

Hidden costs? well not hidden :) £250 for reg.. £30 from ATS for plates (16.99 each 30 for set) £20 for my insurance company to change the records and send out the new paperwork... So total = £300 and the whole thing has taken just a little over two weeks :)

Pity you can't get the revolving plates like the ones on Bond's DB5. I think they would be very practical..................

Edit, just seen you did already
