I've wanted to go to the Mach loop for a while now, to capture so fast jets training - has anyone been there recently?

I'm also interested in any replies please. Is there any day of the week better than another +time of day, best place for B&B, is Cad West the best spot etc etc
Dave

I know someone who was there on Thursday at Bwlch, foggy with F-15s high and not entering the loop, weather cleared up later with 3 Hawks. I'm sure he'll confirm.

You have to take your chances with this kind of stuff. Expect nothing and if you don't draw a blank you've gained. :D
This is a popular place for staying at:

Red Lion

It's cheap and cheerful. Has good food apparently and is only about 3 miles from Cad.

Thanks Kev, have saved it for future use

I was there on Wednesday, there is a thread in the transport section with my photos!

I was there on Monday, but didn't hang around!

best times are monday to friday, best time all day.

Probably the first one, I'm pretty sure I had 'winders on the wings!

Cheesy

lol caught you at last :D if it helps numbers on the side are ZK033 and the time was around 09:30 hours

It's been a busy week on the loop this week, but don't expect that to be the norm. Like has been said, expect nothing and then you won't be disappointed.
There's no day busier than the rest so it's just pot luck (no weekend flying though).
I was down on Tuesday and had a great day.

Gareth - did you just go down for the day or stay over, if so where please. How long did it take you to get down there and is it pretty easy to find.
Some great aviation photos on your website
Cheers

Dave - No I didn't stay over. Its about 100 miles from my house in Congleton, so I set off early to get a space on the car park (don't block the farmers gates!).
If you do a google search for "Mach Loop", you'll see there are plenty of places to go. Pick one and have a day out. You may be lucky, you may not. There's a trek up the hills first but it's worth it when you get to the top just for the fantastic views alone!

Gareth

Cheers Gareth, I'm in Biddulph so about the same distance for me.
Dave

My suggestion would be as a first timer, would be to go to Cad West. At Cad West you have the best oppertunity for any or all aircraft that are using the Mach Loop. Cad West for top shots ie: pilots and nav's waving, Cad East for under shots. The Bwlch is also good, some great cotton trails could be had from there, but options are less for aircraft.
Hope you get some good shots. Don't forget take plenty of warm clothing and possibly a small throw up tent, it gets very cold up there, don't be decieved by the weathere forcast the Mach Loop has it's own weather pattern and it's not Carribean type weather.

Just to go off topic slightly am I right in thinking 70-200 on full frame won't cut it at Cad West and you need something a bit longer?

depends on the shots you want, I use a 70-200 on a 5d2 and if you like wider shots its good :D

How much wider? I suppose a bit of cropping will help but there's no point going if all I'll get is a spec in a load of grey cloud.

I don't know Canon models. Is it a cropped sensor? If so, you will get fullframe shots at 200mm at Cadwest.

I'm on a D700, the longest thing I have is a 70-200 VR1..... (Canon indeed :) )

b****r. Got confused with you and the OP. You'll need the 1.4 converter then.I have to use the 300mm for Cadwest with the D3s.
Did we actually both say Canon! :gag: :D

Yeah.... bleugh...

Well I'll have to save up and get a converter then, or maybe a longer lens, I do seem to need one now and then. Damn full frame....

Get the 2 x III. Bloody brilliant on the 70-200mm.

I didn't even know there was such a thing.. all the last reviews I saw were of the ii and no one seemd to rate it on a 70-200mm VR1. That's a pricy bit of kit but looks worth it if it works that well.

Trust me, its bloody brilliant.
At least it is on my vrII 70-200mm and 300mm.

Looks like I'm Ebaying a few things then..... again :)
