Has anyone been to Durban (S.Africa) I'm planning on going with my girlfriend in november but need to star thinking about flights and places to stay.

Quite interested to see peoples pictures and reccomendations for places to visit.

I went to South Africa about 2 years ago. Didn't actually stay in Durban, but transferred from Joburg to Durban, and then drove 2 hours down the coast to a town called Margate.

It is a great area with some really nice places to visit. One of the highlights for me was Oribi Gorge, a stunning place, with the added bonus of being able to throw yourself 300 foot down a waterfall! (definitely worth doing if you are an adrenaline junkie like me!!)

Hope you enjoy the country as much as I did, I can't wait to go back

Thanks for the Info Phil, I will keep that place in mind. Can anyone else offer any help or advice?

Many thanks for that Simon, Can anyone reccomend me some decent travel insurance? :)

Ushaka marine world is quite good: http://www.ushakamarineworld.co.za/

You have GOT to try some bunny chow (created in Durbs): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_chow

Also, try and do the drive to the hluhluwe-umfolozi game park: http://www.game-reserve.com/south-africa_hluhluwe-umfolozi.html.

We stayed in Mpila lodge. Very basic, but very awesome. http://www.places.co.za/html/8204.html

Ian,

It's a few years back but I stayed in the Blue Waters Hotel in Durban.....on the seafront and a very decent standard. I was working in Durban and not paying the bill so can't vouch for the cost

Many thanks for that Bob.

We have booked the flights to Durban now and have a friend who we can stay with for 4 days so just need to find accomodation for the remainder. I think were also going to look at traveling to capetown for the day.

Just need to ger travel insurance sorted now, really excited!

.....I think were also going to look at traveling to capetown for the day.

Flying time is around 2 1/2 hours each way and then you've got the other formalities at each end.....you'd lose about 7 hours of the day travelling.

This is true Bob we may have to for 2 days instead

Any particular reason you're staying in Durban? Just saying, the drive between Cape Town and Durban along the coast is one of my favourites. Haven't been able to beat it yet, but then again I am a little biased.

If you're staying, Margate or up north a little (St. Lucia) are definitely worth exploring.
