Anyone been bitten whilst on assignment?

Midges - EXPED 100 works all over the world for any biting insects. BUT, as it is "agent orange" it is highly carsinogenic and it makes gortex garments useless for keeping the water out!

But I will worry about having cancer later and enjoy today free of bites! EXPED 100 it is for me, but use it sparingly - spray it on cotton or wool garments with no ill effects and it will keep the blighters away. Just put it on exposed areas of skin. My lad has just come back from a month in Costa Rica on expedition through the rain forest - he was the only one in the group that didn't get bitten. Nothing else is as effective.

Tics - as already said, deer areas have lymes disease - flue like symptoms at first. DOMN'T let the Dr. say it is summer flue! Tics are active NOW through to about October. August and September are the most active months for them. Shoot deer at this time of year and they are often covered in them, in their crutch area mostly - inside of the haunches. Vinegar works toget them off -and that will also help keep midges away, but you smell like a chip shop!

Well, I've started feeling not well, I'm knackered all the time, recurring headache, aching muscles! Had a telephone consultation with the doc today, he's prescribed me a course of antibiotics. The same antibiotics that are used to treat Anthrax, Bubonic Plague, Elephantitis, Syphilis and Chlamidya, amongst other things! I'm at the docs tomorrow to get bloods taken!

Next time I'm jumping about the heather I'm not gonna wear shorts! :shake:

Sorry to hear that your not feeling too well. Make sure that you take the full course of antibiotics and make sure that you don't miss out on them. It's most important to zap the bacteria early and not to let them develop into antibiotic resistant ones, which can easily happen if you don't stick religiously to the full course of tablets. Be aware that the blood test is not always conclusive for borreliosis as antibodies do not always appear in the blood. The British test in other words is not much use. The only reliable test is from a lab in California, but costs about £300.

I will definitely take the full course, a quick internet search on Lyme Disease confirms that it's something I certainly don't want!! My symptoms are mild, hopefully not Lyme, but better to be safe than sorry!!

I hope your feeling better!

I have to say though... self diagnosis is not a great thing! I have heard in the past where people have read up on an illness so much that they start to feel the symptoms. They don't actually have the disease, it's more psychological.

Obviously I'm not calling you a psycho or anything! lol. It just sounds to me a lot like the flu-bug that is going around. I've had it myself... lathargic, aching muscles, pounding head, followed by a really sore throat and a tummy that doesn't know which way to explode! (That follows only if you don't get antibiotics, and lasts about 3 weeks!) It's called Helibacter or something.

Heliobacter pylori, but that doesn't cause flu. It infects the gut and can cause gastric and duodenal ulcers. I think the OP is wise to take his antibiotics, it may only be a type of flu, but it's not worth taking the risk.

That's the one... Heliobacter Pylori... Nasty stuff. I was off work for ages with it, mainly because I couldn't risk being more than 5 metres from the bathroom. Definately gave me flu like symptoms too though, but I think that is largely due to how run down and weak it makes you!

Don't get me wrong with my post, I'm not saying don't take the antibiotics! I'm all for the antibiotics, it should kick whatever he may have!

I was up north the other weekend with the camera, and four days after I returned, I pulled a tick from behind my kneecap! Partly my fault for walking about in the heather with only shorts on!!

Behind your kneecap?! Wow. I didn't think that was possible! Either my anatomical knowledge is severely lacking or you have one very displaced kneecap ;)

Ah yes, good ole Borrelia burgdorferi...

sounds like ciprofloxacin???

Ciprofloxacin is not an indicated drug for Borrelia related diseases and is contraindicated against chlamydia.

Doxycycline, from the tetracycline family, fits the description, and elephantiasis is one of the distinguishing features (of indication) as not too long ago it was proposed as a treatment. All the other conditions can also be treated by this.

Get well soon!

Cheers, it is indeed Doxycycline that the doc prescribed!!
