Anyone any idea what my camera is doing here?

Hi all

Just this afternoon my camera started to misbehave. The images below show the issue. The top image has a bright slash across it which shouldn't be there. The lower image shows how the scene really was. This is happening with different lenses. It doesn't happen on all images and seems to be mainly when there is more, but not overexposed light.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? Any ideas much appreciated.

The camera is a canon 70D, 18 months old and probably taken around 60,000 images. The lenses used were a Tamron 11-16 and a Canon 24-70 with similar results on both.

An odd one but I hope someone can help.

Oh dunno, not seen anything like that before. An initial guess would be something wrong with the shutter curtains. Maybe they are sticking?

Any ideas on shutter speed etc. Maybe it only appears under certain settings...
 
I would say shutter lag
 
It seems to happen at a variety of speeds from at least 1/50 to 1/200 will check again across the range tomorrow
 
I take it the lens is tight on the body mount and does each lens have same effect
 
Yes Mark the lens is tight and yes the results on different lenses are very similar.
 
Bad news. Looks like shutter blade is either loose, or worse, broken.
 
maybe fire off some tests at different speeds onto a black card and see if theres a certain point when it happens . does look odd though as the band seems to be sloping and getting thinner towards one end amost as if it was curtain issue like its dragging one one side only.i guess you could examine it with lens off and fire multiple shots in burst mode to see if anything can be spotted that way.
 
Thanks for the ideas. Going to have to investigate further. Can't spot anything but looks like it must be a curtain/shutter issue. Damn it!
 
Yeah check with lens off shooting slow shutter speeds and you should see what's happening
 
I had this on a film camera and it was a shutter blade.

I took a photo of a church and it looked like god had shone a beam of light from the heavens.

I would blame the curtain lagging.

Just in case you haven't tried this already, turn on the mirror lock-up feature in your camera and then press your shutter button once without the lens attached and that will raise the mirror and expose the back of the shutter. Here you'll be able to get a good clean look at the back of the shutter to see if theres any bending, fraying or other damage without exposing your sensor to dust etc..
 
shutter ,in film cameras it used to go left to right ,in digital it goes top to bottom ,new shutter needed might be just as viable to sell it spares or repairs and buy new ,it won't be cheap

Shutter will be around £200, new 70d 3 times that.
