Yes
Due to the terrible connection speeds of our estate, I'm in talks with OpenReach to get us upgraded to FTTP. They seem a little "challenging" to deal with so I wondered if anybody else had managed this and could answer a couple of questions.

  1. Comparing estimate with grants available on the Gigabit voucher scheme it looks like we can apply for more grants than the total cost of the install. Is that right? Or is it sort of a matching funding thing where we can't get more than x% grants?
  2. Part of the deal is that we will all need to sign up to 12 months FTTP from any ISP. I can't find any ISP who will quote us because...….we don't (yet) have fibre. Anybody know a way round this chicken and egg? Any ideas on a likely price? The only firms I can get to quote are around the £500/month ,ark for a business and won't quote for a home. They will probably do an install for that.

Move to the country, they installed it for free and its like £28 a month.

They even sent a team to dig up our path to install it, again for free and put it back after them.

I know that is zero help to you but im just highlighting the internet lottery in the UK.

We had the worst internet ever, it was 0.75 of a mbps.

They have spead it to large chunks of rural areas because we were so late getting fiber that they invented fiber to the node technology in the mean time which is a cheap way to spread it in rural areas.

Cities and large towns had older system called fiber to the cabinet and charge people a fortune to get FTTP.

They literally gave us all FTTP for free, you can see the little nodes on every lamppost and the thick cables running everywhere, it is quite impressive what BT did.

Yes - that connection speed would be a good day for me. The entire town is caballed with BT fibre AND Virgin Ooomph - apart from the estate I live on which was built 4 years ago with a small piece of copper wire running to it. I am genuinely discussing with the council if we count as a rural property.

The predessor to the gigabit scheme (connecting cities scheme, or some such that I used for my employer a few years back) was administered by the council and they had a dedicated officer who was aware of the fine details of the scheme. if the same this time the officer may have ideas on who to talk to.

I am also aware that gigabit on this list https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband/fttp-providers tend to be very useful from our other site.

Blimey where's that, outside larger villages here you are lucky to get 2mb ADSL if it's below that you can get a grant for wifi but that has only just become possible.
If you're about 5mb like here just get on with it nothing is likely to happen for years.

South West Wales. The back of beyond really. They don't even have a bus service or grit the roads in the village but we have fiber right into out homes lol. So funny

Get a 4G dongle

Thanks - I've contacted a few of those. Most are only interested in business (£400/month kind of level). Some like TalkTalk are simply lying - they really don't offer a service via OpenReach. They have a "UFO" product which looks promising but after a lengthy webchat they admitted it's only available in York.

Get a 4G dongle

I have one. It's close to useless.

So what dongle do you have, the newer ones are great

It's a Huawei AI Cube with a Three 4G sim.

I could mount an external aerial to improve but reports says it's marginal here. Since I'm on the coast, I'm on the edge of their masts which are all inland to stop the signal leaking to France :)
