I want to know if I can split an aerial cable 5m from the source?

I currently have the aerial running down to the ground floor then split for a bedroom and sitting room, I want to split it in the loft for my new loft conversion so I have an aerial connection on the top floor, can I just split it, or do I need some sort of booster box?

Many thanks

Depend on how strong your signal is, best way Is with link, for the way you have it wired

Do you know how I find out how strong my signal is?

Thanks for the link, I may give this a go at the weekend, many thanks

You would need a test meter, use the link everything will be fine, I design Systems all around the UK :)

Oh on a side note , if you ever get interference from the 4g service you would need to fit a 4g filter before the input into the amp & this would cover all your TVs

I'm assuming you mean terrestrial tv, not satellite...If it's working well when split at the ground floor it should work when split in the loft, if it's not so good you can always put an amplifier in the loft conversion (or in the loft powered from the conversion) feeding both rooms.

You can get a Labgear amp in Screwfix for £17.99, 8db per output is just about right to give the signal a lift and push it downstairs. http://www.screwfix.com/p/labgear-lda102-s-2-way-vhf-uhf-aerial-amplifier-1-input-2-outputs/64763

You could just split it, but you would loose some quality etc, It's a lot easier and not that expensive to just get a 4 way (for example) booster / splitter and away you go

Assuming the aerial is on the roof. I would split it close to the entry point in the house with a splitter and booster, and from there reconnect the cable going down to your lounge, and run the new one to the loft conversation.

Or just get a professional in who will have the equipment to measure and adjust, and experience for the best place. We've got perfect Crystal Palace reception where we are in all rooms whilst it shouldn't be possible ;)

When we moved into our bungalow, we had an ariel rigger to erect the ariel on the apex of the roof. The builder had placed aerial sockets in 3 of the bedrooms , plus the kitchen and sitting room The 5 coaxial cables were bunched together in the roof space, so all the rigger had to do was install a 5 outlet booster in the roof, which is powered from a 13amp socket I had installed. Everything worked perfectly and still does.

Many thanks for all the options, signal is good at the minute.

I'm gonna get a booster and install it this week

Two things Lee, don't buy a powerful one, 8dB per outlet is plenty and avoid no-name Chinese promise the earth types.

I was gonna get the one you suggested from screwfix :)

Thanks for the heads up though

@Steep it looks as if that Screwfix recommendation isn't a normal aerial connection, is it ok to use other connections with a normal aerial? It looks as if it is a satellite cable connection, but I may be wrong

Oh yes, Labgear standardised on F connectors a few years ago, same as used for satellite TV, you'd need to buy 3 F connectors as well, sorry. If you haven't done it before, they are very easy to fit, easier than co-ax plugs, even a Polish girl can do it :D
