Hi there, can you help me
Basically Im taking the photo's at my aunt's birthday party, it's going to be quite a big event in a stately home type place. The lighting aint great but it is at lunch so might be alright depending on which room we are in. Just wondering is there anything I should think about whilst Im there. It's my first event and Im a bit scared, so if you can help that would be great.

what sort of shots are you looking to take? What will you be doing with the photos afterwards?

diffuser for the flash, and using flash as a fill in light source if possible - ie use as much available light as possible, but a touch of flash will help lighten eyes/faces, and enable slightly slower shutter speeds than otherwise..
Make sure you speak to people, let them know what you are doing, and help them relax.Talk, chat, joke, and after a few drinks, they will be happy to help you.
Check iso as early as possible, and raise it as far as you safely can (experiment before if needed) and use the 18-135. If you are relaxed, so will they be. Take as many as possible, take as much memory as you can (batteries too) and do not drink alcohol till you have done all you need. Then, have a drink if you wish, but keep your camera very close to hand. You do not need lots of light, just the right sort, so look for good light, windows to pose people by, take a reflector if you have one, or some white card if not and try to get pictures of all present. Be there early, to get yourself ready, and good luck !
