I need to use a white wall as a backdrop in a shoot later today and as I have 2 flashes I planned on using one on the wall and one on the subjects.

To light the wall effectively can anyone give me tips on how and where to position the flash, and am I right in thinking using a bounce umbrella would give the greatest spread of light on the wall?

Yep, right behind the subject, and keep that brolly off it. You don't need soft light. You just need the spread if you want to achieve high key (which I assume is what you are after?) Just watch the eaten edges and flares (don't nuke the wall)
