Ok so I have just been given a telescope by my Dad as he no longer uses it. One major problem is that the main mirror is looking a bit dank as moisture droplets have dried on it and have marked it. He tells me that it still works ok but it would obviously need looking at. I have not taken the mirror out yet so can only get a rough view of it. can anyone tell me if the water would have corroded the mirror by now or could they perhaps be just superficial marks? whilst I appreciate it is a very sensitive part, can it be cleaned with care, as in cleaning a camera sensor with the correct kit? Failing any of this could somebody recommend a reputable place to get it stripped and coated again? cheers for any help, pic of telescope, mine is the 8" version. I will be selling this anyway so an option would be to just sell it as is to somebody that might be interested in sorting it out.

Leave it alone! do not under any circumstances try to clean it yourself. Chances are it's perfectly fine but if you do need to get it cleaned get it done professionally or better yet leave it to any potential buyer to worry about.

You should have no trouble selling it, 8" is a popular size and the scope is a nice one.

Try: www.astronomia.co.uk

Very knowledgeable and helpful. They're based in Dorking, Surrey but will readily give helpful advice over the phone, but as Hugh says above, don't touch the 'innards' yourself.
