Hi all...my second post!!

I have always loved taking photos but i would love to take it to the next level. When i left school...to many years ago to remember, i can remember saying to my parents that i would like to do photography, however i did have a tendancy to do things and get bored so they put me off the idea and i did beauty therapy instead, i finished the course but have not done a manicure since,,,,however my interest in photography stays strong.

I would love to do a course and maybe start it professionally eventually, can anyone suggest what course is best, i live in Aberdeen, Scotland and would like to do something here if it was possible.

The second thing is i little olympus digital camera, but would like to get a digital SLR, my budget is about £500 but not sure what to get....any suggestions???

Hello Ms Starlet. For local courses you need to be enquiring at your local colleges

As for cameras, look at somewhere like Warehouse Express as a starter. £500 will get you a Canon 450D or 1000D with a lens. And because I'm not in the least bit biased, a Nikon D40 for a lot less, or D60 for a bit more than this. Budget for memory card(s), card reader, and other stuff that may or may not take your fancy, like a tripod, camera bag, lens UV filter for protection, spare battery (cheap ones off ebay) etc. Warehouse Express have some kits comprising of the above cameras with misc lenses and extras. There are other dealers obviously, but WE are as good as any to start looking at.

Or have a look at MPB (Their banner appears regularly on here) for good quality second hand gear.

If you are likely to outgrow your first camera (and that's more likely than you might think) then it can make sense to make that initial purchase second hand.

I would be more than happy with second hand, always looking for a good deal!! The more i can get for the money the better

Thanks for the info i will have a look and keep you all posted

I have only recently properly pursued my interest in photography by upgrading from a P&S Casio to a Nikon D40 which I purchased last summer. Whilst this has most of the options I was looking for, I have just started to encounter some of the limitations imposed by the camera and found myself thinking, "I'd like that" as I read off features from other cameras.

My budget was £300 for getting into the hobby and since then I've made only one other purchase, a telephoto lens, which means my entire cost has been ~£450 for a Nikon D40, 18-55mm kit lens, Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. That gives me a lot of options for developing my photographic skills before I find it necessary to splash out more on another body.

Just wanna agree with AliB - I always buy secondhand if I can as the gear is pretty much the same, but a fraction of the price. If you are uncertain, take a more knowledgeable mate to check the gear over with you.

Took me no more than 4 months...it's stunning how quick it can happen!
