No personal experience of shooting birds there, but I would think Bembridge harbour and Yarmouth River mght be a couple of locations worth looking at Dave.

Cheers Ken, will be going over on the Yarmouth ferry so that will be a good place to start, I know there is a RSPB sight and an English Heritage sight. Bembridge may be worth a visit, but wonder if you will loose the sun early there?

will have to give it a go and see if I can find anywhere

The RSPB site is a nice walk, park near Brading Station. There are a variety of birds but no "guarantees". The trail crosses a runway so you can get good shots of planes landing and I got a shot of a red squirrel in the woods!
Two hides near Newtown - National Trust, normal waders and ducks plus woodland birds.
