Any runners on here?

Well, I was 50/50 on the leg last night, set the alarm for 5am anyway and decided it was worth a go. Zero degrees before the sun came up, but a cracking morning for a run. Clear blue skies and light wind when the sun appeared about 6k in.

Leg felt good once I got going. Aiming for 1:45 thinking my stretch goal of 100 minutes was out the window. So very pleased to get round in 1:38:09 (watch time). Really didn't expect that with the dodgy leg.

Only hiccup was not checking my Garmin after a firmware update on Friday. It reset to miles, so I had no idea what pace I was running (brain works in kilometres after 10 years in Oz). Had to do the old mental arithmetic whenever we passed a distance marker.

Injury aside, a successful first crack at a half marathon I think.

Very well done James, congrats.

A great effort James, well done!

Marathon 21 today. Very tough - no real reason I just never got into it and suffered in the second half.

Not sure how the run tomorrow is going to go.

Decent goodie bag though ;)

Nuts, just plain nuts. Amazing you can do it and hold a job down too.

Great North Run number arrived yesterday 26 days to go and feel pretty much on track training wise, so hoping for a good run.
Have a 10K the weekend before and a last long run planned for this weekend coming. The rest of the training will be shorter runs to keep everything ticking over.

Did GNR in 2014 so hoping for a faster time than then, and I'll be a little more prepared for the length of the final climb! :D

I'm going to be doing a 10k at the beginning of October. I haven't been running for long but I'm fairly confident with how the training is going.

I need to get off the treadmill and on the road shortly. Does anyone know of an app that will announce the distance at intervals via the headphones as you run?

Endomondo, strava, runkeeper all do that (all are 'free'). I've used both endomondo and runkeeper and they worked fine.

I've managed to injure my knee running on a treadmill. It was nothing sudden but later in the day I found the pain getting worse which is on the inside of my left knee. It happened about a week ago and it hasn't improved much since and walking distance and down the stairs is very difficult.

I'm supposed to be running 10k at the start of October and this could put back my training quite badly. I need to see someone about it but not sure who, do I go to a GP, a physiotherapist or some sort of sports injury place?

Physio / sports specialist. Unless your'e really lucky, your GP will know surprisingly little about biomechanics. Also their advice will be "stop running". And of course, that will almost certainly fix your knee ;)

Finally got around to seeing sports doc, and have had stress fracture 99% confirmed.

I've had 5 weeks (since the half mara) without running at all, and going to give it until the end of September before I start some bits of jogging again.

Good reminder of what can happen if you push things too hard too soon. Always knew my legs were weaker than my cardio fitness, and it seems I didn't give them enough time to catch up.

So, lots of cycling, swimming, and boxing lately trying to stay fit. Maybe I'll come back as a triathlete in the new year. ;)

Just take it easy when you start again. Your running legs will soon return. Its frustrating though. Most of my injuries in the past have effectively been self inflicted by too little stretching. It gets worse as I get older as well!

Well done mate. I've a half-marathon coming up next weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed for a PB.

Went to watch the end of a local triathlon yesterday. Now those guys were working hard. A field of 90 and finishing times varied between 4.5 and 8.5 hours!

Can anyone recommend a good pair of headphones for running?

Needs to be wireless (Bluetooth) and not fall out. Have some cheap £15 ones off amazon which are ok but are just buds and sometimes work their way out - also it can drop BT connection at times. Prefer to spend less than £50.

I've used theses ones for over a year and found them pretty good.

Yes, they do occasionally work their way out of your ears but I've found that to be the case in most earbud headphones - even the sports type. Pretty good sound and does the job for not a lot of cash.

Yurbuds stay put in everything except really heavy rain. Check them when you get them and make sure you have the right size bits for your ears (CS will send you different ones free if you need them).

Not sure how good the BT is as I use corded ones.

I never did sport i was one of the smokers in school choosing to use my breaks killing myself rather than kick a ball about. 20 years on the fags have stopped but the pounds have piled on. I stopped smoking about 8 years ago now i think and have put 2 stone on. I've tried several times to get fit but its hard to create a habit you've never had. At the moment I'm trying the 'couch to 5k' training plan I'm on week two and i have to say at the moment I'm enjoying it! so fingers crossed. I would recommend it to anyone.

I've stopped running now, as it's causing too many other issues with joints, including toes, and time is getting difficult to find as well.

That's how I started. Dabbled with running but the couch to 5k was great. Went from running a third of a mile to a half Marathon (albeit very slow) in 5 months.

That's great to hear. I'm hoping the long slow increments will be good for habit forming. I've tried different things over the years but running seems to impact the least on anyone's time. 3 half hour runs in a week should be achievable for most people. I'm out at 6.30 and back before the family have woken.

Yeah, me too. But I did the zombies one ;) More exciting with the incentive of saving Abel Township.

I don't often post on this thread (being an ex runner), but following the successful completion of my fitness instruction course (I passed), I have been using the gym around four times a week. My weight has gone down by around six kilos and my resting HR is now in the mid to high forties. My BP is now around 130/70 and I have noticed a general improvement in my strength and aerobic fitness.
My question to you good runners.
Have you ever heard of exercise being measured in MET's?

I think that you'll find that many types of fitness equipment produce measurements of effort which are "translations" of METs, expressed in more familiar values such as kcals or calories etc.

For example my Garmin watch provides me with an estimation of effort expended in kcals based on basic information you input to the watch when setting it up, such as gender, age, weight etc. It's all very approximate though.

AFAIK MET's are laboratory values and in real life there are limitations to their use.

Wow that sounds amazing! Ive not heard of it before. so you can still do the walk and run technique?

Absolutely.

There are basically 2 versions. In the mission series you select a roughly 30 min or roughly 60 min run and get on with it. The story evolves and interrupts your tunes. If you choose then occasionally you get chased...

In the C25K series it is a full on proper C25K (very similar to the NHS one) but you can play your own music and listen as the story unfolds. You get given exercises to do which build up just like a regular C25K and the last day the gates open, you get covering fire and the controller screams "RUN!!!" as you run 5k on a critical mission.

Went very quiet in here at the end of the year. I hope you weren't all hiding inside from the weather. ;)

I got back jogging again through Nov / Dec following the fibula fracture. Touch wood - all seems to be OK.

Didn't have any goals last year, but ended on 524km for the year, after starting running in March, and missing about 3 months or so with the leg.

Aiming for what should be an easy goal of 750km for 2017, along with 2,000km on the bike and 40km in the pool. All pretty conservative, but the primary goal is not to break anything else this year. :D

So far so good, 7.5k shuffle along the beach this morning to start the new year.

Anyone setting goals for 2017?

I used to do a lot of running until about 3 and half years ago (got a house and then a dog). The last couple of years I've just ran in the months leading up to a holiday to get fitness levels back up - I enjoy running on holiday. 2013 was along the seafront in Portugal, 2014 was Central Park and Vegas strip, 2015 was the rough terrains of Lanzarote, and this year was Central Park again and along the Hudson (the Highline is closed before 7am)

Anyway, I've started again today. Getting married in September 2018, so plan on losing about 20lb and getting fit again (going to the States for a month, so plenty of running to get in :D)

I ran about 600km last year, but after the HM had to back off & stopped at the end of August - had swelling on my knees that wasn't going down, even after a weeks rest, and various things were hurting and unhappy. Might well re-start soon, since I've put on 8-9lb or so and feel soggy now, but with the hills round here I'll be happy to manage >3km as a first run.

Yeah, still running a bit. Strava says I didn't do as much as I planned in 2016 but I started training for Rome in December and kicked it up a bit. In fact, you can probably tell from this screen shot exactly when I started training :)

strav-dec.jpg

Planning to race less and train more this year. Who knows, I may even still be running strong when I reach the Coliseum on 2nd April ;)
