ANY RUGBY PHOTOGRAPERS OUT THERE

Looked at your Falcons game jj on flickr they look ok. What lens was it you used & which lens are you selling a Kidney for to buy. I was at the Knights game trying to get some desent running action but it was hard work at times. Photo on picasa website.

For some reason my phone won't view your link!

I was just using the cheap Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6. I'd like something of an f2.8 flavour but we'll see. If my contract gets picked up next March I might treat myself. Just don't tell the wife!

JJ Glos...those are some pretty nice shots. I'd forgotten that the lights at Kingsholm are pretty good. I seem to remember getting 1/640 f/2.8 @ ISO 1250 which is as good as some football league grounds!

The faster glass would definitely be a help to you there then!!

Where is everyone off to this weekend?

Thomond Park, Limerick - Munster v Perpignan - Heineken Cup

Ravenhill - Belfast - Heineken Cup

Ooooh, now both of those I am highly jealous of. Never been to Thomand. The last Munster game I did was against the Dragons in 2007 and it was at Musgrove because they were rebuilding Thomond.

Ravenhill was a good laugh as well.

I've just got the 1 game this weekend...

Cardiff v Toulouse in the Heineken. Should be good, as Toulouse are still unbeaten (though so are Perpignan arent they?)

Musgrave Park is horrible for lighting. Luckily we don't use it that much. Thomond Park is great for lighting. Never been to Ravenhill yet so tomorrow afternoon will be interesting.

Perpignan were beaten by Treviso by 1 point in the first round.

Ravenhill was as good as rugby grounds get I found! Good lighting there. Thankfully the Munster game was a Saturday early evening in April so lighting wasn't really an issue (except for blinding sunlight!)

I seem to remember Ravenhill being about 1/640 @ f/2.8 and ISO 1600 or 1250 in the middle.

I do remember there being a huuuge bit of the ground at the clubhouse end which was just empty grass (is that for GAA?! - possibly not in NI) so the floodlights for the tryline at that end were as good as the middle of the park...the only other thing I remember was an incomprehensible taxi driver asking if i'd been to the Emirates recently on the way back to my hotel.

Luckily tomorrow is an early afternoon kick off so I'll get decent lighting. Forecast is meant to be dry and cold which is good for me.

Its a home game for me, Bridgend Ravens vs Tonmawr.
Swalec cup round 1

And the weather forecast is good which will make a change !!

I had put the camera away as it was proper miserable during the warm up, but as the floods warmed up things improved enough for me to have another go!!

I'm currently reading a lot of lens reviews... Thing is though mon is tight so I probably can't afford a Canon. So many mixed reviews of Sigma and Tamron though... Oh well, back ff to google!

If you have to go for a brand other than Canon i would only use Sigma if i was you, and i have done in the past.

Rugby this weekend lads? snow permitting. Knights game should be on, pitch been coverd since yesterday.

2 games this weekend...
Newport Dragons v Biarritz tonight (live on Sky Sports 2)

London Irish v Brive tomorrow (if Reading is accesible due to the snow)

Will the fun never stop? Anyone else doing the Premium European Lager Cup this weekend? Kieranmcmanus? Kensutz? Tobers? Thebionicdan? Anyone?!

ive got Leeds Carnegie v Bucuresti Oaks on Sunday in some sort of Cup competition, amateur stuff on Saturday, all weather permitting of course.

Jamesb won't be too happy with the Dragons game being postponed. I'm having a weekend off after a good weekend last week. My photo is doing plenty of rounds thanks to the dirty play of Dupuy.

Yep, luckily I found out about 5mins before leaving for the game. Means I'll be covering the replay tomorrow instead of the London Irish game...half the cash from this weekend than I'd expected.

Can't believe i haven't contributed to this thread.
I cover Neath RFC, steep learning curve this season. Especially under the candle powered floodlights.

nowt for me :( but hopefully some Super League in the new year.

nowt for me either Andy until the start of SL!! hoping to shoot a few more Giants games this next season:thumbs:.
A merry Xmas to you on yer way round the world!:). Kind regards Graham

Not even any SL for me...now that the "south wales" franchise have moved "north, to be closer to the heartland of RL".

Not quite sure how they're going to get away with that, but it means no more Super League. Shame, as I quite enjoyed it too.

I've ordered a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 (second hand), this Tamron just doesn't like anything but the light from a super nova and even then only when at f8 and above! As you can tell my results were poor from the game yesterday, glare was a big problem, but at least the Glos won! :D

Hello everybody,
I'm a newbie on this board - I shoot rugby union and am the club photographer at Northampton Saints. That means this year, I am shooting Guinness Premiership, Heineken Cup and LV= Cup matches. Saints are doing really well so I am having a great time pitch side.

Not that long ago, I was shooting National Division 1 (now the Championship) and thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Castle Park.

Here's a few examples from this season:

Hi Claire nice work, will be looking forward to seeing more of your work oh and welcome to the forum

Hi Claire - welcome in. The lighting on your #4 (or is it #5?) there is super.

Hi Claire, try creating a seperate thread rather than posting them in this one, you'll probably get more comments.

Great set, like Tobers says the lighting on No4 is sureal.

Thanks for the tip Gary - I'll post a slightly different set.

I think both you and Tobers are referring to the photo of Chris Ashton in mid air at Welford Road - Nikon's and the Welford Road flood lighting do not mix so I am yet to get completely accurate results but I rather like the warm version I did manage to create.:)

Rugby league is upon us.. time to get my eye in for the season... might do a friendly this weekend...

Im covering both codes this weekend Tony, Batley v Huddersfield Giants and Leeds Carnegie v Bath, both on Saturday, RL 12.OO KO, RU 15.00 KO

Aye, thats the one, i really like the light and the background looks unreal also, sort of like the players have been edited into the scene.

Hi Gary - thanks!

The lighting at Welford Road does create some very strange effects.

The Leeds Carnegie vs Bath match is going to be a huge game. Saints play London Irish at the Gardens this weekend and then it's Bath. If Bath lose this weekend, I dread to think what will happen at our game at the Rec.

Theres also plenty of Challenge Cup ties involving the amateurs on Saturday afternoon Tony, if the Leeds Carnegie game is off then im over to Sharlston or Bradford for a CC match.

Have you seen the high ISO samples from the MK4 tony, there were some on POTN and Fred Miranda, looks like Canon has overtaken the D3 but apparently the D3s takes things to another level

the high iso examples i have seen are a bit of a waste of time... nothing will compare to a poor floodlit match .. I ahve a set from Swinton http://rug.fotopic.net/c1667422.html done at iso 6400 f2.8 and shutter down to 320 at most ... try a mkIV in conditions like that and see what the results are.. they are the tests :)
