ANY RUGBY PHOTOGRAPERS OUT THERE

I ahve my first proper rugby UNION game on saturday...i have done snippets of union but only half an hr here and there as the local team starts half an hr before rugby league on the next pitch :)

However I have a commisioned job on saturday ... its a bit different than league so whats the must get shots aprt from rough action? :)

I often spend one half shooting from the end which your team (i.e. the team you're client is interesting in) is attacking. That should get you some nice head on action - obviously you are after the contacts etc as per your usual stuff. Solo "player running with the ball" shots are good for the stock archive.

I often will do a half from the side at the 22 yard line that your team are attacking (and some stadiums let you follow the play a bit along the sideline. I do this to get a different perspective on the scrums, particularly the scrum-half picking the ball out and sending it down the line. Also allows you to get close in on the lineout jumps on your side of the field which can be quite spectacular when the guys are hoisted up - you may need to stand up briefly if they are right in front of you, and be on a shorter lens. Also once a try has been scored the scorer tends to turn around and head back to his team so you're more likely to get a good celebration shot.

I dont worry so much about getting the actual tries any more as "it's just a guy lying on the ground with a ball".

Cheers

Tobers

sorry my fault should have given more detail.. schoolboy error on my part :(

Only there to half time.. only want 4 pics of each side as no preference.. I know wiht league its dont bother with "man running with ball" or "man lying on floor wiht ball" so am guessing same with union.. what about a good.. throwin? is that what it is.. or are they too easy and old hat.. scrums? are boring i would say.. (sorry not 100% on terminology)

ADDYONBIT is lineout jump = throwin?:)

will be using 300 and 135 primes ..... i do rugby league ok so just wanted to know if theres any major differnces i should be watching for to try and get?

thnaks so far tobs :)

Haha! Yes, lineout jump thing = throw in. You'll get the two tallest blokes being heaved up in the air - it can make for a good pic especially if they are right in front of you (135mm might be a bit long but nothing wrong with a tight shot). Good facial expressions on offer.

Scrums are a bit dull except for the scrumhalf picking the ball out the back and chucking it down the line.

If you're only there for one half, then best shoot from the side. Might be worth saying to the PR rep that you're only doing a half so are they OK if you do 10 mins at one end, 10 at the other, and the rest in the middle.

Otherwise, same as League - action, contact, throttling, punching etc.

I watched it on the telly in the end. Widnes' fitness was again too much, Haven were lying on at the play the ball trying to slow em down, and were retiring a very narrow '10' in defence, but still couldn't keep up with them. The 2 turning points for me, as a Haven fan, were the dissallowed Haven try in the first half (an absolute joke), followed by Millar's sinbinning at the end of the 1st half (fair decision). :(

Let's see some photos, especially the Mattinson one!! :)

Not to the standards of you lot but after a 4 month break my winter season starts in earnest tomorrow. Been getting withdrawal symptoms. Away last weekend so missed the first weekend of the Youth & Junior season and the first home open age game. Only one game tomorrow and one Sunday but roll on next Sunday; 3 games, 3 grounds and 15 minutes between each.....
