Ill shift this to Talk Photography :)

Welcome to the forums Nigel :)

Wouldn't go as far as 'Train Spotter' but I do work(volunteer) as an Assistant Guard on the Talyllyn Railway in spare time(when I can get up there from Hertfordshire)and occasionally take pictures on days off.

I have been known to stand at a railway station/line taking photos, along with a friend of mine who does take numbers. He has his hobby and I have mine (photos). On these occasions the hobbies complement each other. Taking photos of trains, boats, planes or buses does seems to be 'frowned' upon but it's no different to people taking photos of birds in their back yard or the like.

Some train spotters are very dedicated i must admit, i work on the railways ( maintainance etc.... ) and i've seen some stand there for hrs in pouring rain.Fair play too you.

Welcome Nigel. Some good pics on your site...some at the SVR, I should appreciate more than others ;)

Sorry for posting in the wrong area ,tht will teach me to read things properly,

And sorry about the Trainspotter thing I will rephrase that as a Preserved and Main Line Railway Photographer

Nothing wrong with trainspotting, I used to do it when I was a kid. Could be worse, I could've been like the feral youth of today.

Nothing wrong with Camera/Train spotters who flash into your eyes, only trouble is that I do not have a steering wheel so that I can go up onto the platform and say Hi!

Trainspotters are one of the most denigrated and picked on groups in society today. The media in general are all too eager to paint them as anorak wearing weirdos who shouldnt be allowed out on their own. This I find extremely unfair as they have never done any harm to anyone and are picked on by people who dont understand their hobby.
I have been a trainspotter in the past but as I work with the bloody things every day, I must admit the "Identikit" boxes on wheels are pretty much all the same to me these days though I do like the steamers and even the preserved diesels as they are something different.

And whats more, unlike certain other groups, eg 'football supporters' they don't have to get :gag: drunk out of their skulls at the slightest excuse :bang:

I'm also a football supporter but I don't get drunk out of my skull at the slightest excuse.

You know what group really irk's me? Bloody Stereotypers.

Steam or Diesel modern or preserved are any of you "Trainspotters"

Back to the original post, I think these photos show why I wouldn't be a trainspotter in this day and age. I was never into steam but used to love the diesel hauled stuff and to a lesser extent HST's but these DMU's are boring!

Have to say, nice pics and I'm more interested in the location than the trains themselves. It's also a shame that you didn't show us Stourbridge station too
