Yes
I could well be speaking to a very select few here , but are any of you other Pentax users out there getting excited about the new K3 (?) that is possibly being announced next week? If rumours are to be believed, it could be very interesting!! It's almost like Christmas......:lol:

The American Pentax forum is in virtual meltdown over the new camera and UK Pentax user forum has a few threads going as well. Personally I want more focus points, the Sony 24mp sensor and better af tracking otherwise I will keep the K-5II.

I suppose we could get a pleasant surprise!! Just for a change, there is talk of a full frame coming out, using the same body as the K3, next year.........:bang::bang:

It would have to one hell of a camera to make me part with my K-01.......

Recently left the fold, previously shot with the K10D, K20D and then the K5 but became a bit frustrated at Pentax's slow development, both lenses and bodies.. moved to the Nikon D800 and in comparison the focus is simply awesome.. I know a few on the Pentax forum have their fingers crossed regarding FF but for me ultimately it's going to be an unknown quantity even if they do release one, shame as I did enjoy using the Pentax bodies but probably won't go back

Pentax are promising focus up to the competitors with every new camera release. I hope this time they will be spot on, but I have already moved out.

Otherwise K-5 family bodies were one of the best in class. It's a shame they are so slow on widening the lens selection and the price hike they have done in the recent years.

Likewise I'm hoping for significant auto-focus improvement, especially in the tracking department. Otherwise will have to consider stopping investing in Pentax APS-C gear and investigate other options (e.g. D600 - although still yet to be convinced!)

If the rumoured spec list is true, and the specs bear out into the expected performance, then I'll be very happy!

Not long now, but kinda wish I'd not found out the date of announcement, makes waiting worse!

I like the silver one. With the triple FA silver limiteds this would be a beautiful and very IQ capable combination. But it will cost a big money. Times when Pentax did offer a good price/quality ratio are in the past I am afraid.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday. I agree, I think it looks great.....but I would still buy it in black!

"9am Tuesday 8th October Pentax Australia are having a major new product announcement".

Not long to go now :):)!!

24MP Sony sensor, all new af system with 27 points. 8.3fps .... anyone want to buy my 7D? :)

"Newly developed for the K-3, the anti-aliasing simulator* applies microscopic vibrations to the image sensor unit at the subpixel level during image exposure, generating the same level of moiré-reduction effect as an optical anti-aliasing filter."

So selective AA filter then.

Can't afford a new camera and my current one does all I want, but I'll be interested to see a new Pentax.

Just wait a couple of years and it could be the excellent deal that the K5 is now.

Pity Pentax/Ricoh don't push themselves more - enough good models to cover most bases, a range of 30+ lenses from 10mm to 300mm, and up to 560mm if you have very deep pockets, plenty of backwards compatibility and IS in the bodies.

I don't know why you would get too excited, because, many if not most of your current pentax (sorry ricoh) lenses are not full frame compatible. You may as well buy Canon or Nikon at that point. Before I get blasted, I do want more competition, if only to keep the prices sensible or see more features.

Personally I don't want full frame, I see no need for it with the photography I do but should Pentax ever release such a body (which they will do eventually I would imagine ... Ricoh have shown they are serious about their intent with this camera imo) then I have from 12mm to 600mm covered with full frame glass. It's also a fair bet they will release new lenses at the same time due to the limited selection available at present.

I wonder what the actual ratio of full frame camera sales vs crop is ... I would hazard a guess that crop wins by a hefty majority. It is also said that a large number of DSLR buyers never use anything more than the kit lens.

I believe that FF is about 5% or less of DSLR sales ...

The Pentax 560mm apparently isn't that great as it's supposedly more of a telescope design than a camera lens design.
Long lenses (& FF if they bring out a body) are where options are lacking for Pentax.

Although equally theres obviously a difference between entry level crop camera's and something like the K-3 which seems like it'll sell for not far off 6D/D600 money.

There were rumours of a 18-70mm F/2.8 lens as well, if that appeared it would I'd say do more to set Pentax apart than the K-3 has.

The main problem for Pentax now is that it's very much playing "catch-up" with the other offerings out there so is very unlikely to steal any market share away from Sony/Canon/Nikon.

The improved focus is long overdue, although at least they've sorted it now it seems, but it's hardly a feature to attract new buyers. The main advantage Pentax had was the quality/features vs costs that it offered over other manufacturers, the K5 was excellent but it's price had crept up from previous models, as had lens prices, so it probably didn't make any great inroads in the marketplace. If the new model isn't priced sensibly then it's also unlikely to capture anymore market either so it's watch this space.

Despite having moved to Nikon (D800) I still would like to see Pentax do well, I do think it needs something a bit more trend setting to have a chance though

What lens is that? ^^

Are Pentax ever rumoured about doing a successor to the 645D?

Certainly looks like a hell of a camera from the specs, looks like its got some good things going for it.

looks like Ricoh USA's slip up earlier today has resulted in the launch being brought forward ...
MSRP£1099 body only. £1199 with 18-55.
DPReview's initial preview said "we were hoping that the new AF system would be faster".

I take it that's the 250-600? Very nice but it's discontinued.

Indeed, it looks like it'll be nice for existing Pentax users but is it going to tempt new buyers away from say the D7100?

If Pentax isn't going to "offer more for less" on the body then I think they need to do it on the lenses, not just weather sealed cheaper kit options either.

Well, it seems to be priced fairly sensibly.....in the USA and Australia! Using today's exchange rate (which I know is not really fair) it is the equivalent of £760 in Australia and £810 in the US.....even allowing for other pricing factors, that is one hell of a difference to the UK price of £1099!! :shake: :bang:

Apparently the recent drop in the £'s value against the € might mean that prices are higher than anticipated.

That's really interesting.....thanks very much for sharing those thoughts! So I guess that was your post I was reading over on Pentaxforums yesterday? :D

Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but I'm looking to get my first dslr after using a lumix gx1 (great little machine) for about a year.

I was looking at the canon 70d and suddenly I found the k-5iis and the k-3 which offer great value for money in comparison, however I have used my girlfriends old pentax k-110 and although I like the feel the auto-focus is horrific, just so bad I have used it for about a week and I find myself missing so many shots and have to use manual focus most of the time.

I was just wondering how much it's improved can it compare to canon or nikons af systems?

I will be using the camera on my long walks with my dogs so take lots of landscapes but also the ability to take action shots is important.

The autofocus on both the k3 and k5iis is significantly better than the k110. Neither are quite up to Nikon standard for full 3d tracking, but for most normal shots (including being out and about with the dogs) you'll get far more keepers than with the k-110, so I wouldn't worry there too much. One thing to think about is what lens you are pairing the camera with, as that will also affect focussing speed.

Good to know thanks, It's not that the lens is particularly slow but it just searches and finds nothing to focus on over and over again, my gx1 and even my phone have no problems in the same situation.

The K3 autofocus (along with most other things) is very much improved over the original K5 I used.....I haven't actually used a K110d but I'm guessing a camera with technology that is nearly 8 years old would be lagging FAR behind!! :)
